Still not settled on names and due any moment- don't know what flavour. Trying for traditional Scottish names that are not too popular, but not to far out, and work well outside of Scotland.

Girls names we find easier and the shortlist is only:

  • Flora
  • Ishbel

Boys, we are still struggling a bit- like lots of names but not sure we LOVE them. The shortlist is:

  • Ranald (current forerunner)
  • Archie (possibly too popular both south and north of the border)
  • Hamish (stupidly tried this on 3 Scottish male friends some months ago- think they are still rolling round the floor laughing Confused)
  • Murdo
  • Cameron (not sure about surnames as first names)

So, what d'ya reckon???

Wouldn't have said Ranald was Scottish, but its OK.Cameron is horrible.
For boys, I like Angus, Ruaridh, Iain,Alastair,
For girls, Iona, Flora, Ailish, Ishbel

holeinmytights · 14/04/2013 11:52

The ishbel i knew was nicknamed Pishbel. Sorry. Flora v pretty though.

TidyDancer · 14/04/2013 12:05

The only name on your list that I like is Flora.

JollyPurpleGiant · 14/04/2013 12:05

I love Murdo and Flora.

DS is Harris. DC2 might be Ramsay.

Geordieminx · 14/04/2013 12:07

I think kids always come up with "nicknames" Flora.. Spreads easily? Wink

My cousin is called Belinda.. Only found out a few years ago she hated her name because she got called "bell-ender" at school Shock

MrsMaryCooper · 14/04/2013 12:07

I like Ishbel

(Elspeth is nice too and similar)

I like Archie & Cameron. I am in quite a good catchment area in Edinburgh and there are a few Camerons here too - so not chavvy in my opinion.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 14/04/2013 12:11

Love Ishbel, Hamish and Archie but Archie is a really quite popular at the moment so you may be better steering clear.

How about Innes, Keir, or my favourite, Gregor?

TigerSwallowtail · 14/04/2013 12:15

Cameron is the only one I like.

LadyBeagleEyes · 14/04/2013 12:19

I was going to say Fraser but I see you've ruled that out.
How about Ruaridh, my second choice for ds who is a Fraser.
I also love Ishbel.

Theas18 · 14/04/2013 12:21

Ishbel is nice but remember isobel and all the variations are very popular in the UK

ItsYonliMe · 14/04/2013 12:28

All the names you have suggested are lovely (although Cameron is a bit overused IMO). A bit more unusual is Harris and my cousin has just called her son Garve - that's nice and unusual too.

BNmum · 14/04/2013 13:47

Flora is nice as is Elspeth that has also been mentioned.

I like Hamish for boy but maybe i'm missing something if others have laughed their socks of when you suggested it. What about Vaughn (not sure if Scottish or welsh origin)? Monty (Montgomery)?
