Expecting DC2 in four weeks and can't decide between Elspeth or Kirsty.

DS is Fraser and would like another Scottish name too much our Scottish surname

What what do you think?

Really dont like Elspeth...sounds like someone talking with a lisp to me.

Kirsty is boring and dated.

Kirsty is a bit Sharon, as someone up there said. Elspeth is nice.

Kirsty is a very 70s/80s name. It's my name and I'm in my late 20s. I wouldn't say it's chavvy but it is a bit dated to give a child now. Although I don't like Elspeth either.

Both are lovely.

I am good friends with 3 Kirsties. They are all "officially" Kirsteen, which I think is even prettier!

I prefer Kirsty myself!

Oh I love Kirsty - much prefer it to Elspeth.
What about Kirsten or Kristen?

Elspeth is one of my all time favourite names. I know an awful lot of 20 somethings called Kirsty. I really dislike the name but I do know that it's strangely popular in Scotland.

Kirsty is a nice name.

I've never met or known of anyone called Elspeth. I think it looks odd written down - like it should be Beth or something like that.

I think it depends where you are. I have a Kirsty and nothing negative at all (and as a mispronounced Sharon I'd spot it). I'm in Scotland and here it's pretty much timeless.

I prefer Elspeth, but I prefer ElsBeth to ElsPeth and then you have the option of using Beth as a nn too Grin

When I was younger, I hated my name (still do really) and there was a lovely series on TV called The Flame Trees of Thika (?sp). The girl in it was called Elspeth and I was desperate to be called that instead. I think it's lovely.

Elspeth.

In my head Kirsty is very 80's name. Think it had a surge in popularity in that decade where I grew up.

Kirsty is lovely. Not so keen on Elspeth. Think it was the name of a character in a book who wasn't very nice, and the association has stuck a bit. Plus I have a good friend called Kirsty who is very lovely indeed.

So, I am called Kirsty and my little brother is called Fraser and I think they go really well together. Totally disagree that Kirsty is the new Sharon - Kirsty Young, Kirstie Allsopp - hardly peope I'd correlate with the same connotations that Sharon derives!

Kirsty was popular in DS1's class, he's 26 now. I work in primary and there's one Kirsty in the whole school, she has a brother with a 1970's name, so her parents obviously favour names that were popular when they were children. I wouldn't say it was a name that was at all common these days though.

I still can't see what is wrong with the name Kirsty Confused. I really like that it's not popular for my dd's generation, although nothing wrong with popular names, my dd1 has a top ten name from the year she was born. KenDodd don't worry, I don't think your name is chavvy/common Smile. We chose to call dd Kirsty as when she was born she was only little (6lb15) and we needed a short, cute name, I stand by my decision .
