Help my poor nameless DD!

DD2 arrived on Tuesday and we still have no name agreed on! Help!!!

Ideally I would like a reasonably unpopular/unusual name, nothing top 100 and nothing too girly.

Names we like are:

Astrid (but worried about shortenings to ass??? Any thoughts?)
Cerys (but have a good friend with this name so is a bit weird to use it)
Sabina (know a child with this name so bit copycat to use it)
Hazel (don't like possible shortening to 'Haze')
Amber (clashes with surname)

I like Lucy but DH doesn't, also Jemima and Tabitha.

DD1 is called Ruth.

We seem to like foreign/Scandinavian/German type names quite a lot so any ideas about those would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Smile

I was going to suggest Kerys instead of Cerys but congrats on your choice!

For anyone still interested, we have decided on Hazel Smile. With the middle name Joy, after my DSis.

Thanks for all the alternative suggestions - lots of them I liked very much, but DH very very hard to convince - feeling grateful to have made a decision at last!

Thanks

Hope? Goes well with Ruth although not Scandinavian! If we have a girl in two weeks she will be Hope and second name either Leonora, Senara or Kinvara.

Interestingly, a lot of the names that have been suggested were already on my 'long' list! Grin

So far DH is still gunning for Cerys. I am struggling to come up with anything that I like better that DH also likes, but will keep you posted of the final decision.

I do still very much like Hazel too, although DD2 is starting to look a little bit like a Cerys.... Smile

Oooh how about Martha or Marta. I know a beautiful Martha or is it too girly?

I have a Hazel, so I'm biased, but I love the name and have never considered shortening it to haze. She does, however, get called hazelnut but I'm sure we'll phase that out before she's old enough to know about it!

Do you like Iris? That's what came to my head when I read your original list :)
That would go nicely with Ruth.

Good luck in deciding!

I really like Astrid. I know a lovely (not remotely Scandinavian) one who's about four now and goes by Asti. As a teacher, I've only ever come across two Hazels, both of whom went by their full names (and both of whom were among the politest, best behaved children I've ever taught, so only positive associations there!). Of your choices, I'd definitely go with either one of those two, or Tabitha.

Love Astrid and also Ingrid of the Germanic names. Just discovered dh's grandmother (Ukrainian) was Aniela, which I think is beautiful but unlikely ever to have a dd myself Sad

Cerys is lovely and goes well with Ruth too.

I wouldn't give a second thought to it being a friend's name. I think it would BU of her to feel annoyed that you had chosen 'her' name. It doesn't belong to her.

If you really love the name then go for it.

Lovely Scandinavian name I heard when nannying for a Norwegian family was Mille. Pronounced Mee-la. My nannying charge was called Mina.

I like miller for a girl too. Congratulations and good luck deciding
