What do you think of Kierra, Aurora and Reo?

I like unusual names, I don't know what I am having yet so I have Kierra or Aurora for a girl. Or Reo for a boy. What do you think? I know really it should only matter what I think but family do not like Aurora, I think its beautiful. I think Reo is a bit out there, but then again I like it. What are your opinions ladies?

To me, the spellings Kierra and Reo would make me pronounce them differently to Keira and Rio - I would say key-aira and ray-o. (actually I quite like the sound of Reo as ray-o Xmas Grin).

But people always pronounce my name wrong too, and DD's name, and can never spell either of them, depends if that would bother you or not.

Actually Keira is the feminine of Keir which is a Scottish name. So the e was always before the i in that particular anglicization.

Not to be confused with Ciara the Irish name with which it shares etymology. Ciaran being the male version, which is usually anglicised to Kieran.

Don't believe everything you read in a baby names books or websites. Some of them are shockingly incorrect with their etymologies.

Made up spellings of regular names are ridiculous.

Well yes. But most of us use actual names, rather than collections of letters that are almost names.

You should go for what one you like the best. Try not to worry about whether other people approve. Everyone likes different names. It would be a boring world if we all used the same names! [fmile]

It's Ciara. It's an Irish name, should be spelt the Irish way (the fact that my username is Mammy, probably gives away the fact that I'm Irish anyway Smile )

Ciara is pronounced keer-a
The I has always been before the E, until Keira Knightley became famous! I much prefer the original Irish spelling and think it's a lovely name

Aurora is sweet, but for that reason it might not hold up as well when she's older?

I don't like Rio at all, with any of the spellings.

Personally, I wouldn't make up spellings to be different. It'll be a pain for your kids and like it or not, they and you will be judged for it.

Or Kira, which is the Russian version. Or Hindi. It's a name that has a good provenance, coming from the Sanskrit 'Kiran' which means beam of light.

I like Kira or Keira.

Aurora would be fine, if you can pronounce your 'R's.

Rio is, like, a footballer? And is usually pronounced "Reeeeee-oooorrrr!" In bellowed tones round these parts

oh, sorry!

So, Keira, like Keira Knightly, is pronounced Keer-a, but I always thought Ciara was pronounced Kee-ar -a? Or is Kee-ar-a an anglicised pronounciation, and now often spelt Kiara>

Yes, 'Kiera' is as valid a spelling as 'Keira' - they are both Anglicised versions of 'Ciara'. 'Kierra' looks terrible though, and I would pronounce it to rhyme with 'sierra'.

Keira is spelt KEIRA, with the e first. It IS a real name (for those who say it is not), it is Irish

Spelt like that it isn't Irish. That's the Anglicised version.

How is Aurora chavvy?! It's lovely.

But Kierra and Reo are nicer with the proper spellings.

CarlingBlackMabel · 07/12/2012 10:11

Ok, Aurora is lovely.

Keira is spelt KEIRA, with the e first. It IS a real name (for those who say it is not), it is Irish, it means 'dark' or 'black haired'.

If you use Rio, spell it Rio.

And choose the names that YOU like. There will be people who love and hate each and every name you suggest. I regularly see my DC names in lists of names loved, and hated.

Have to say I am not keen on any of them.

Report
sparkle12mar08 · 07/12/2012 10:07

Nope, just don't like them. The impression they give to me (and it is only a personal opinion) is that they are 'chavvy' names, regardless of whether Aurora is spelt correctly. It's an instinctive reaction, and of course if someone I knew in real life said they'd named their child Aurora then I'd jolly well just have to get over myself, but that first impression and reaction would always be there.

Ryo would be another possibility if you want an alternative spelling of Rio.
It's a Japanese name. It is pronounced differently, but I know a Japanese guy who anglicises the pronunciation to 'rio'.

I don't think Auroras in the same category as 'Kierra' and 'Reo'???

Auroras a beautiful name and spelt correctly Confused

Report
DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 07/12/2012 09:58

and just scream 'My mum couldn't spell, okay?!'

Reallly? Even though Aurora is spelt correctly?

ISeeThreadPeople · 07/12/2012 09:58

WHY would you spell them differently to the actual way you spell them? Alternative spellings I get, different origins fine, but a completely made up spelling? Why? What benefit does it actually confer apart from a lifetime of spelling it out for people and a vague assumption that your parents can't spell.

I know a family who like creative spellings. They have a Riio, Mylea and a Murfee.

Of course it's your choice but I retain the right to not understand it one iota.

Aurora is beautiful.

Kierra: ok, better spell Keira.
Aurora: very nice.
Reo: don't like, sorry, better spelt Rio but still chavvy.
