Baby names

Daughter is 5, but people are now confessing they don't like her name!

My little girl is called Tyra (Marie is her middle name).

When i was pregnant, i had the name Megan picked out if I had a girl. But when she was born, she just didn't suit it.

Then when she was a few days old, I came across this name in a baby name book, and I fell in love with it. DD suited it so much.

Since then, I've been faced with comments such as 'ohh, very unusual - never heard of it before' and 'Tya? Tyler? Tiara?' 'Did you call her that after Tyra Banks? (this is a very popular comment). But now she's started school, the comments are getting a bit strong. One mum actually said 'Isn't that a black person's name?'.

I'm actually getting so paranoid now about calling her name when we're out in public. There's another girl in dd's year called Beyonce, and I heard a mum say the other day (she was standing in front of me at home time) say: "Oh, here comes Tyra Banks and Beyonce', then start laughing derisively with her pal.

My daughter loves her name and so do I. But I now feel like I've cursed her with a name she's going to be made to feel silly about.

It's actually from the name Thyra which is originally Scandinavian. I hadn't even heard of Tyra Banks until I got to the registry office and the registrar told me about her.

Please make me feel better! (Or just give me your opinions. I can take them. Honest).

I was thinking about this last night, and remembered reading the name Thyra, in a Chalet School book - it's the name of a norwegian pupil, iirc. So it is perfectly possible that the american name Tyra is a slightly-changed version of a scandanavian name brought over by settlers. Not that the origin of the name should matter anyway - it's an excellent name.

She's five!! She is named! WHy are they telling you they don't like her name?

Sure, I met up with a woman from school and her kids had a different style of name from my own and she pulled an 'oh drab' face when I told her my kids' names. That's life. Tune it out.

It's a great name! I had a similar feeling about my daughter's name....because I came onto mumsnet and found people generally didn't seem to like it. I was so upset!

Like you I even avoided calling her by her name in public incase people turned their noses up. But then I got over myself, realised it's just a name and that everyone has different tastes in names and went back to loving my choice. You will too, I guarantee it.

Don't pay any attention to what people say or what you read on internet sites. I found it shocking how rude people can be about something so personal and important to you. Everyone has different tastes in names some people will love Tyra because it's less common and hate Lilly because it's so popular and vice versa.

It is a nice name, your daughter loves it, you love it and that's all that counts. Go shout it to the roof tops!

orange Artemis is on my girls name list too. I love the fowl books as do my younger siblings but somehow they missed the fact that it's a girl's name too!!

Think it would be nice as my grandfather who studied classics taught me about Artemis as a child, she was my favourite goddess!

WantAnOrange · 21/11/2012 07:11

I know how you feel OP. Definately use the goddess thing it always shuts people up.

DD is called Artemis and quite a few people said "what like Artemis Fowl?" or "I thought that was a boys name!" Er...no, like the greek Goddess, that's the joke in the book, Artemis Fowl has a girls name...

Its a nice name. Ignore idiots. Beyonce is dafter IMHO. That is clearly after the singer.

What is a black person's name?

I've just googled tyra banks and she's beautiful.

I love Tyra - its a beautiful name - ignore the ignorant comments and if you can come up with a clever retort use it until the shut up!

Rude. I know who Tyra Banks is and no doubt she would have been what I thought if I met your daughter, but to actually ask if it's a black persons name or laugh at her name is just completely rude.

Ignore them, it's a pretty name.

They can all just naff off and stop making you feel this way. Your Dd has a lovely bright pretty name. Call her name with confidence.

It's a lovely name. Take no notice of those rude people. Tyra Banks didn't come to my mind but so what anyway. I can't even remember who Tyra Banks is.

Do you really want to be bothered by the opinion of the kind of person who openly makes fun of a 5 year old's name and says things like, "Isn't that a black person's name?"

Tyra a lovely name.

Tyra is a lovely name. There's a very cool, strong character in Friday Night Lights called Tyra and that's what I think of when I hear that name.
Ignore those people, they are ignorant!

I've never heard of Tyra Banks.

But if someone said "isn't that a black name?" I would ignore everything that came out of their mouth after that point, anyway.

RancerDoo · 20/11/2012 20:22

Op, people are stupid. And bloody rude. You'd think adults would have a bit more about them than to laugh at a child's name.
I think it is a perfectly nice, sensible name btw. I do think of Tyra Banks, but there are far worse people to share a name with.

Yika · 20/11/2012 20:15

I've heard of Tyra Banks but didn't think of her when you mentioned the name. It's a strong, uncomplicated name - I quite like it.

Tyra is a great name. Simple, strong, elegant.
What a nasty comment that woman made. People that mean about a CHILD don't have opinions that matter. Just ignore it stupid school-gate stuff from people who have nothing better to talk about!
Don't change her name unless your dd hates it. But I think it's awesome!

I can't believe how rude your "friends" are being. Wtf does she mean by "isn't that a black persons name"? That comes across as being the comment of a pretty racist person to be honest.

Tyra is lovely. Yes Tyra Banks is famous but she's by no means a bad role model. Quite the opposite.

If I were you I would say something back.

Maybe concentrate on the origins of the name Tahira (which is often shortened to Tyra) which means pure and virtuous in Arabic, rather than Tyra banks.

I'm surprised you're getting so many comments, whether people like the name or not. You must know lots of rude people Grin
There's a girl at school with one of my kids called Tatianna Paris (double barrelled first name) and OTT as I've always found it, it invites absolutely no negative comments at all.
