Humphrey - yes or no?

We both like the name Humphrey very much, but it does seem to be a love it or hate it name. What's the MN verdict?

A baby Humphrey might be cute, but imagine when he's 14 and trying to be in with the cool crowd, or 25 and trying to be taken seriously as anything other than a young fogey type. Don't do it!

No, sorry.. It sounds like a cat's name.

I love it, called a hamster Humphrey when I was a teen. Don't think I could actually use it for a baby...

Watch out, watch out there is Humphrey about!

Does anyone else remember the adverts for milk in the 70? Or am I the oldest person on here.

There was something mysterious offscreen (Humpfrey) who used a red and white striped straw to steal other people's milk.

Humphrey is just awful. Cute on a Jack Russell, not on a human.

It's such a lumpen, beige, misshapen mess of a name.

I must admit, I secretly love this name but not sure I would be brave enough to use it. If someone had a little Humphrey though I would think it is super cute. Humph for short.

DD's beloved elephant is Humphrey Smile I think it would be cute on a baby but not once they got older.

I quite like Humphrey actually - those who say it is 'dated' and an 'old mans' name forget that the old Humphreys were once little too. Peoples' associations change very quickly once they meet a cool young teenage Humphrey - they start to associate the name with him, not some old man they used to know.

But I agree about the lack of nice nicknames - but would you have to shorten it?

It is a truly excellent name.

I don't like those names you mentioned either,Forties, but at least you could introduce yourself without cringing. Humphrey is hideous.

I agree Forties. I think it's better than all the ones you've listed. I like it more than Florence, Teddy etc as well.

But how can a 15 year old Humphrey be any worse than the myriad Archies, Alfies, Reggies, Ronnies, Berties and equally appalling names? Humphrey is a proper name and lovely.
