And to throw two completely wild ones into the mix (since they both have ye old England echoes, to my ear at least) - Roland and Cedric.

Gregor is lovely.

I did like Gilbert a lot, but then some friends pointed out that a Gilbert is that gob of spit that gross young men cough onto the floor. It really put me off!

Edithweston, your list: Gawain, Percival, Belvedere, Wulfram, Bede, Aidan, Hrothgar, Lucas, Marcus, Marlowe, Cornelius
is brilliant, though I think most of them are too 'out there for me' but I love the 'old English' feel to them. Would definitely consider Lucas and I love Aidan but too similar to Adrian who is my cousins new baby (why she didnt call him Aidan instead is quite beyond me!)

Ooh Gregor, had not considered that, it's different yet not wierd, will add it

Digby has been vetoed already off my list by DH, he thought it sounded like a dogs name despite family connection to Digby Jones

Bran, thats new, I'll think about it a bit, I had wanted to add Bram (as in Stoker) but got laughed at (to be fair I do get some odd ideas and have to be reigned in, I dont actually want to give my child an unusual name and I hope my choices are mainstream without being every day)

Rory would have been a front runner for me but it didn't go with our surname.

This is the best names thread in ages! :)

Love Lucas.
The Cooper series has a Bran (pronounced more like Braaaan she says) which might make a nice middle name for a longer first name - Theoden Bran would work.

I think Rory, Bertie (would this be a nn?)' Arthur and especially Hugo. Toby is OK, but I don't like Theoden (thought it might be a typo for Theodore, which I bet would happen a lot in RL and quickly get annoying).

I really like Bartram, Bertram and Bartholomew (tried and failed to persuade DH into the latter), also Diggory, but prefer Gregor to Gregory.

Some others: Gawain, Percival, Belvedere, Wulfram, Bede, Aidan, Hrothgar, Lucas, Marcus, Marlowe, Cornelius?

Thanks guys, um... I think Bertie would be Bertram

Yes, we still definitely need a middle name so could use one of the above

Remus, I'm so sorry but I think of Rowan as a girls name! I like Gregory and Digory though (The Magicians Nephew), I really wanted Peter from Lion, Witch and Wardrobe, but I hate 'Pete' and I think its unavoidable in secondary school

Would you have a middle name OP??

I think Hugo Theoden has quite a ring to it....imo

Gosh a list of names that I like...!!!!! That never happens. Therefore I will be of little help Smile

if you would push me in order:
Hugo
Rory
Arthur
Bertie
Theoden

Would Bertie be a Albert, Herbert, Gilbert or Robert? Or just plain (lovely as it is) Bertie??

More:

Rowan (LOVE this - dd2 would have been it, had she been ds)
Gregory
Digory (not so fond of this but has a similar 'feel' to your list)
Hugh (rather than Hugo)

Nooooooooo to Alain being feminine!

Your names are making me think of King's Dark Tower series and Cooper's The Dark Is Rising series AND making me want to read LOTF AGAIN!

Thanks Remus, DH dismissed Bartholemew (nn Tolly) and I dont like Barnabus as it would be Barney (big purple dinosaur).

I do like Bertram, which we would probably put on BC for Bertie

Tristan and Hector were on my first list, but got whittled down as not as loved as those in my top 6, but I think Alain is a bit feminine?

Theoden is the name of a King in The Lord Of The Rings.

Report
Nightstar · 29/07/2011 13:42

Actually Theoden is from Lord of the Rings, which I'm sure will put a huge number of you off it, but thats the reason I like it

No new similar suggestions?
