Baby names

Hamish - is this a nice name or have I completely lost the plot?

I find myself seriously considering Hamish as a middle name (first name will be Benjamin), but I am a bit suspicious that this might be a case of pregnancy insanity and that Hamish may, in fact, be a ridiculous name... Any thoughts?

Other middle names we have considered include Zachary, Milo, Daniel, Oliver, Lucas and Henry.

Thank you!

You're not losing it! Hamish is such a cool name. So cute for a baby but distinguished when older.

Hamish is lovely. I have a wee Fergus. I'm going to add hamish to the list for ds4.

I like Benjamin Lucas or Benjamin Oliver, nothing wrong with Hamish if you like it, it reminds me of Highland Cattle because we had one called Hamish when we lived up that way!

I like those two because I think Lucas and Oliver flow nicely from Benjamin whereas I don't think Hamish flows quite as well.

My sister is marrying an Aussie named Haimish with an extra i, seemed unusual at first but now think it's great (and he is v nice to my sis which is the important thing). Strangely he also has a Mc surname but no Scottish connections whatsoever...

He does get called Mish a lot though!

Hamish is a fantastic name and I have a 10 year old Hamish and it suits him perfectly.
Go for it.

Good name. So long as you don't use James as a middle name (because it's actually not a 'proper' name, but the vocative form of Seumas, which is the Gaelic for James, so you would be calling him James James).

( thinks James James Morrison Morrison Weatherby George Dupree... shut up, thought )

Love Hamish, and also the other similar scottish names, Hector, Fergus, Angus, that sort of thing. But I have no scottish family at all and it doesnt feel right to use a scottish name to me as I have no connection with it

If our DD had been a boy, she'd have been called Hamish - I have always loved the name. Unfortunately we couldn't fit Hamish in her name anywhere!

I think Hamish is a very handsome name. It's got a ealth of history but still quite quirky and, comparatively, underused.

I love it. It's DS1's mn and I almost stole it to name DS2 - but we chose Angus for him (which is my cat's name! - I know, you don't have to say anything). We're English, but FIL is Scottish and my Grandfather was Scottish. FIL cannot understand why we chose either names, though Hmm.

But no, you're not barking. It's a great name.

chumble We're both scottish and live in Scotland. According to DH Hamish is "twee". Harumph again. I honestly can't think of another name I'd rather use.

Wow! I can't believe everyone is in favour - i was expecting a mix of responses. This has really put my mind at rest that we're not making a mistake. You do start to lose the plot a bit after a while, don't you? Thanks everyone Smile

Love love love Hamish. In fact, I'm desperate to call our baby Hamish if it's a boy, but my dh is having none of it. Harumph.
