I've just got back in to crochet after circa 25 years! I have some baby soft dk wool and would like to make a lightwieght baby blanket for my friend's first baby. Could anyone point me in the direction of a really easy peasy but good looking non granny square pattern? My Mum knitted me some lovely blankets for DS who loves them and it is the soft lightweight look and feel of those knitted blankets that i am aiming for (but wouldn't achieve were I to knit them, crochet more my thing as lack the manual dexterity to handle two needles!). When I suggested to friend that I was going to crochet her a blanket she laughed and I'm sure she is expecting a garish afghan but that is not what I intend.

Also what happens when you need to join another ball of wool? My book seems silent and granny and I never made anything that used more than one ball (she is no longer here to ask)

Ranting - how nice of you that would be great. - how do I give you my address without the whole world knowing it? Funny think is she is expecting a 70's style blanket and if I had time would love to do one for a joke and give it to her to open first!!

Yes, I get what you mean, will have a trawl through some patterns, I have a lovely solid fabric crochet one but, it is a 70s pattern and the colours shown on it are very 70s but done in a nice yarn in different colours would be just the ticket. I can copy it and send it to you if you like.

Thanks so much Ranting. I have a snuggly zigzag pattern which looks great but so far (on test piece) I had great difficulty in following the pattern - I think I need to write it out myself as following their pattern I skipped half way row 3 and started doing row 4 - oh dear!

My son loves the blankets my Mum made for him (he wraps them around himself) and I wanted something like that for my friend who had a still born baby last year. I want to make sure this baby has something made from love - do I sound really soppy? Good think is the baby isn't due until Christmas so I have a bit of time yet!!

If it helps I have a books and leaflets full of crochet blankets, can have a look for you, if you like. Have a lovely white one which is granny squares but it has light pink roses in the middle of some of the squares. I'm rather in love with it, don't have a baby to crochet it for.

Something like this perhaps.

To join in the ends I just use the new yarn for the last yarn over of the stitch iyswim and then lay the yarn over the stitches I'm about to do and crochet over the ends.

Thanks - I have searched the net and found lots of patterns but wondered whether any crafty mner might be able to say - this one is really easy you can do it and it'll look good - that would really help iyswim.

Thanks for the new ball instructions - I think I get it now

New ball of wool... you just do the next stitch with the new wool, and then weave in your ends (as i remember)

Lots of crochet patterns on ravelry, you need to sign up and await your invite

otherwise try googling crochet pattern - lots of them but you will need to sift the granny ones!

Good luck!
