Make your own gardening mat...?

Hi there - searching for a lovely gardening mat (a soft one to save the knees) to give as a Christmas present, but can't find anything wonderful... can any of you crafty people suggest how to go about making one please? Your tips would be greatly appreciated!

cf, I think it would look funky

you could weave in the odd bit of suagr paper or celophane or summat as well to make it look ironic and moderne

but how durable would it be?
