AIBU?

to think hot tubs are a waste of money?

Some people I know have spend £5k on a hot tub for their garden.

Of course, it's their prerogative to spend their hard earned money as they wish. (And I nodded along, and faked some enthusiasm for their choice.)

But I can't begin to count the number of better ways of spending £5k than a bath in your back garden. You can't even have a decent swim in it.

If you have £5k spare, would you spend it on a hot tub? Or something much, much more exciting.....?

I really enjoy hot tubs but no I wouldn't personally spend that money on one, as even if I got a cheaper Lazy Spa I think it would be expensive to maintain and not sure what you have to do to clean it but I can't be bothered. I'll save it for a nice treat on a spa break.

Shock agedknees did the paramedics have to take you away on a board in your bikini?

Some people love them, I know a couple of people who have them, use them occasionally (and really enjoy it) but most of the time they sit unused.

£5k isn't that much money to us, I just have zero desire for one.

I have one and love it. A glass of wine and a soak is bliss. I use it probably 3-4 times per week, so it gets plenty of use.

What makes it better naked, ForalltheSaints?

If you have one in the garden then you have to wear a swimming costume, and having experienced hot tubs in Dutch spas where you do not wear one, would never wish to be clothed in a hot tub (nor a sauna for that matter). So I would never have one in the garden.

I have a hot tub and I'm def not a swinger . Me and hubby sit in it with a glass of something nice and put the world to rights . Better than sat in front of the TVs 😀

I have a blow up one which is brilliant, on the patio now and was set up,in the garage last winter.

It's just my dh and I living here and I don't mind sharing with him,

When my daughter and partner come to stay they will be in it all evening. I tend not to use it while they are here and empty and refill once they are gone. No way would I get in with anyone other than dh

Ps. Upkeep is pretty easy. Test water and add chlorine daily and occasionally other chemicals as required (all of 2-3 minutes) and weekly filter rinses (10 minutes).

Got a Lazy-Z inflatable hot tub for £450 about 6 weeks back. Very sturdy, decent size with own heater/pump/bubbles etc. As good as permanent versions that cost 10x as much!

Would like to go on holiday to one of those places where you get a hot tub and sauna attached to a cabin, or similar.

I would enjoy having a hot tub but would never do the up keep required, so it isn't happening.

Gym membership for me (with hot tub, sauna etc) - someone else can do the work!

I bought one, at my DC's insistence, about 4 years ago; it seemed like a good idea at the time, but I doubt it has been used even a dozen times. Now they are at uni, it never gets used!

Open to offers!!

Yuck yuck yuck, can't get past the idea that I'm essentially sharing a bath with whoever else is in it. Can't be doing with gym jacuzzis for the same reason, all those stray hairs and other people's dead skin. (vomit emoticon)

Also, perhaps I'm wrong here, but aren't they hideously environmentally unfriendly...

I think they are very chavvy. Went to view a house once when househunting and the woman selling it thought her hot tub was the ultimate selling point. I almost told her the first thing I would do if I bought the house was to rip it out.

I'd love one, am currently trying to persuade DH to get the above since 5k is slightly out of our range.

A work colleague has a big swanky one, and at her baby shower lots of people were in and out of it, I found it a bit yuk tbh - sweaty, possibly horny randoms are not for me, seems a bit unhygienic. I'd get in with DH no probs tho < daydream >

I would bluddy love one. Went to an excellent hen weekend years back involving many lovely cocktails and living in the hot tub to the extent that we jacked in the idea of going out drinking and clubbing in favour of poaching in the hot tub. I would be a nicer person if I had a hot tub

YABU. My PIL have one and it is great. They use it pretty much every day and have had it for about 3 years I think, so the novelty hasn't worn off! I always look forward to it when we go to visit.

DH ( king of the 9 day wonder gadget purchase) bought an inflatable one. Much cheaper than the real thing, although not as comfy and needs changing often. We used it a bit, but it conked out after a Scottish winter.

We are thinking of getting a proper one, they can be bought on ebay for around £2500 now so around £3000 including fitting. Waste of money, well I think buying a luxury car is a pointless splurge, or redecorating a room more than once in 10 years. Each to their own really.
