AIBU to be a handwriting snob

Yes, I probably am but this is my first AIBU (in 2 years!) so be gentle

Looking at DD's geography books she has started doing what I call bimbo handwriting - round circles instead of dots above the i's, big massive circle shaped a's, d's and p's etc (wish could articulate what I mean).

She used to have normal handwriting. God knows why she has decided to change it. AIBU to tell her to stop writing like this and go back to normal? (BTW DP has told me to leave her alone and stop being a fussy old mare)

Just looked at my daughter's History book today - All titles are in double-lined letters/block and coloured in in alternate colours. And, best one, there is an exclamation mark with a heart at the bottom.

If your snobbery can stand it, can I recommend shorthand lessons as the antidote to bubble handwriting?

I did them at school (my mum wanted me to have something proper to fall back on because she mistrusted A levels ).

People are really impressed when I use shorthand now, and it's not only eradicated my bubble handwriting, but any other form of legible handwriting.

Other shorthand-writing friends say this has happened to them.

To cheer you up, OP - this morning DD gave me a list of ingredients she needs for her Food Tech lesson, and the words were all NORMAL!!!!

No weird, loopy, circular dots over the i's, just normal, grown-up and very readable writing!

Only worry if she starts doing hearts or smiley faces instead of dots.

Once she starts uni her handwriting will go all to hell anyway. Assuming they still write with pens.

My writing is truly horrendous, as was my dads. In fact, we were often asked at school of he was a doctor of if we had signed out homework ourselves! He was a very very very smart man too!

I used to change the style of my handwriting at that age roughly once a week or so, slant it to the left, slant it to the right, round with cirles above the 'i' etc. Then perhaps one week I would leave long stalks on letters like 'g' and 'y', then another week I would curl them round etc etc. Grown up now and have developed a adult style I suppose. You can always spot a teenage girls handwriting though, it's quite sweet I think. Trouble is some never grow out of it!

I went through a stage of writing on a ruler in script writing

Having since then cultivated my own individual style, I find myself from time to time fondly remembering a lovely Romanian guy who although he spurned my advances adopted my letter ds and said he would never forget me because of it.

Leisure & Tourism writing made me laugh too.

French 7s (sounds vaguely orgy like ) - I do those, and lines through zeros. So is not bimbo writing in my book. And god how could I forget about typeface a's.

I absolutely love the term Leisure & Tourism writing.

I am going to tell dd later that I started a thread on MN slagging off discussing her handwriting. She will roll her eyes and call me sad, I can see it now.

lol at this thread especially "Village Life in Ghana!!!!!!" and Tinker spending hours copying Donny Osmond's signature. I still do French 7s (which sounds like a sex act or a cocktail) and seem to vaguely remember spending hours trying to perfect a typewriter style lower case g... The next stage will be her changing the spelling of her name, I predict, GetOrfMoiLand. All the girls in my school, once called fairly normal things like Nicola, Kelly, Jessica and Caroline suddenly became NiKkI, CelLi, geSSi, and KaZ!

And I don't exactly circle dot my i, but I sort of put a half comma thingy instead, like a wimped out cicle.

My writing is very affected and devised entirely during my teenage years. I don't have a single straight line in any of my letters.

My best friend at school, her 'thing' was to do the tinyest writing in the world. She used to get 17+ words on a line.

French handwriting is incredibly distinctive. Every French person I've ever met writes exactly the same way. I was walking down the street here in Sydney the other day and a cafe had a chalk menu out the front, and I thought oooh, they've got French staff.

saying that, whilst a french 7 may make it easier to distinguish between a 1 and a 7...BUT it kinda seems to mkae it more difficult to distinguish the 7 from a 4....well...over in the UK anyway....germans seem to be perfectly capable of distinguishing between their number

I used to press so hard whilst writing that the page curled as well adding extra curls, european 7s, backward Fs etc.
It's a right of passage for teenage girls isn't it? So YABU!!!!!!!!!

Zero with line through is used by programmers to distinguish between O and 0 they look very similar particularly when hand written so to avoid confusion they use the line. Love the line through zero by my z are curly more like those expected in german classes of old. but then again on the contient they use . when they mean , eg 3.000 would be 3,000 [confused emoticon] never got that.
