Which is fair enough if he were making suggestions HE likes, but no, if I ask him well what kind of names do you like he just says 'dunno'.

So if he 'doesn't know' then why can't I just choose??

men don't normally ahve the same enthusiasm for babies in general the way women do. not at the pregnancy stage anyway..

Most men just aren't as into thinking about baby names as we are. They don't want to make lists. If pressed, they will gaze into the middle distance and say "[insert dull or unspeakable name here] is nice..." I told my DH that if he didn't look at my list or make one himself, he would be summarily dismissed from having any input. It worked but it was like pulling teeth.

that's a typical male attitude. they say no to every name you suggest, and then you feel like just choosing the name yourself. been there done that..

I really wanted Imogen but was told it sounded like a Japanese Washing machine...an im..o...gen .Also liked Dominic apparently for hairdressers (good career i would have thought)I think this is a common problem apparently my father was just the same the only nmame he could think of for me was his fathers and I mas a girl (just for the avoidance of doubt!!!!)

I'm not even pregnant yet, but any conversation about baby names is met by DH with 2 suggestions - his sister's name, and my brother's name. Nothing else is acceptable. grrrrr.

Oh my dh did the 'too German' thing too. I wanted to call dd Claudia. She ended up being called Amelia which I think is in fact German but slipped under the German-detecting radar.

Oh littleducks, I thought I was alone. I think people don't believe me when I describe our "naming" debacle. I too have sat in registry offices embarrassingly close to tears.

I had the same problem.

so, I sat down with name books and wrote lists of names I liked.

then I gave the lists to DP and made him pick the ones he liked too (ensuring that it will be one I love, see what I did there? hehe)

I think Gillian is lovely. I would spell it with a J though, Jillian looks fresher. Karen will be boring for another 40 yrs though. Not horrible, but just .... blah.

I like Lydia. Very elegant and feminine and pretty but not frilly.

It is also very 'steady' in the charts, it has hovered between 70 and 80 for the last 5 or 6 yrs, so it's nver going to skyrocket up the charts.
