24m2 studio is an ok size?

Designing a studio for rent. It will be separate but attached to our house. Does 24m2 seem habitable for a single person? Architect wants to go bigger but that is going to cost more so rent would have to be higher than planned.

I'm a bit confused, do you mean 2.4m squared or 24m squared? Or 6x6m?

I have a studio flat that I am renovating which is 27m2 and I’d say you can manage on 24m2 if you are clever with the design. I suppose it depends on who your tenant will be to be honest. A student for a year yes; a divorcee who needs a new start for a longer period possibly not. Also if you are renting it out the budget and yield will come into play; can you justify the extra build cost for the increase in rent if any. X

I stay in a studio which is 20 square metres when I travel for work. It's tiny. Perfectly OK by myself for a couple of nights at a time, but living there, no way!

24 square metres is really small.

There are technical standards for new housing which require 37m2 for 1bed 1 person. If these have been adopted by your local council you will probably need to meet this for your planning permission

For a long term rental or a holiday rental? It’s very small for it to be someone’s home so you will limit your interested people. I certainly wouldn’t rent somewhere so small. I’m assuming you’ve googled and looked at “24sqm house design” online to see possible layouts and how small they are.

It’s all very well saying a bigger house will be more so you’ll have to put the rent up but you can only rent out at a price which is in line with the local rental market. Have you talked to letting agents to see what this is likely to be?

That is really small if you intend to have a double bed in there! Does that include a shower room (obviously won’t fit a bath). Can you fit in an oven and washing machine or are you expecting them to use a launderette? Or are you just going for a combi microwave?

There is a housing crisis where we live. I’ve seen smaller studios rented out for multiples of what we’d be comfortable charging.
There would be large windows and outside space with the studio which I think would help but obviously it needs to be of a decent enough size to be habitable. It would have a bathroom and small kitchen area. Don’t think that we’d include laundry facilities

I lived in a space that size for a few years when starting out after uni. Was very well designed with bathroom and kitchen very neat and cleverly organised. And a queen sized bed. This was in Paris where everyone lived in tiny spaces though.

That's 6x4m (not 6x6 as one pp put) that's the size of a living room. Yes it's possible with clever design ( look into 'tiny houses') but check if it needs to be a certain size to be counted as a dwelling or you will limit your market to short rentals or similar.

Could you have a different solution. Maybe put the bed on a metzanene floor to increase the sqm? Lots of very clever ideas on van life websites, boat building or as above tiny houses.

as a standalone flat you andolutely need to include a washer/dryer (or space for it).
without you might fall foul of planning laws as separate dwelling.

sizewise with a good layout it's possible.

For a hobbit? Yes. For an actual adult human? No.

It sounds way too small. You need to trust the architect.

And you should definitely include a washer dryer. Do you realise the ball ache of lugging your laundry to and fro to the coin op launderette...in the rain. You have no coins because noone does. The machines are all busy. You forgot the laundry detergent...no staff to assist when machine fucks up...

Make it big enough for a kitchen, small dining table, living area with couch, double bed, and WC/shower room, with enough storage.

Try and imagine you personally living there.

I lived in 16m2 and was perfectly happy but it had a very clever design with plenty of storage and a Murphy bed. I would dismiss small studio with a normal bed without a viewing. If you want for a small studio to be appealing, you really need to make it so that it can be a multi-functional space.

I know Dublin is crazy for housing so people would rent that. Those of us who don't live in London/Dublin probably wouldn't..With that layout I wouldn't. The bed dominates the room and everything would reek of cooking.

ive lived in a studio in Germany and it was fairly basic and small but suited me for that period of my life. I’ll do some sums re what we can finance and what the rental income would have to be

As student/new to work I rented 20m2 anex and it was ok. It had washer drier under workspace, sink, small fridge and on top small oven with two hobs. Also double bed, two door wardrobe, desk, small breakfast table and three piece bathroom.
I would include wasinh machine if I were you.

Idk why people complain it is small.
That size is perfectly ok for young adult who is not a hoarder.
