We named our baby a marmite name

And I bloody love the horrified reactions more than the delighted ones:

What???
Oh my god that's a mouthful isn't it?
Is that a name? Oh, I'd call him 'xxx'

It's not even that out there, I think people are just rude, but it cracks me up

Surely a Marmaduke will just be called Marm for short?

Oh no, certainly not in the circles we move in. We only use 'Marm' when addressing the Queen when we used to attend her Gin and Bingo Evenings at her big house in London.

We were going to call DD this, then my sister stole the name. Can you believe her?! It was DH grandma's dog's niece's name and really special to us

In France Marmite is a cooking pot so a couple couldn't really use that as a name so they plumped for Nutella, sadly a court decided...

'The name 'Nutella' given to the child is the trade name of a spread,” the court's official decision read, adding that it is “contrary to the child's interest” to be named Nutella, as it “can only lead to teasing or disparaging thoughts.” The French love Nutella, but apparently not as a baby name.'

So how about Marmaduke for a boy? It has has the spread connotation (marmalade) with an element of royalty thrown in.

For a girl, maybe the hyphenated 'Lemon-Curd'

Reminds me of that Father Ted sketch with Mrs Doyle trying to guess the priests name.

Actually Prequel has a nice ring to it.

I hope the poor child is able to change their name themselves when old enough if they’re having to endure a lifetime of people being horrified by their name and their own parents find it amusing. What a way to make your child’s life easier. I wonder what the point of the thread was - OP didn’t come on here to ask if it was unreasonable to enjoy people’s reactions. I highly doubt they enjoy it - sounds like a validation seeking post because they’ve realised they’ve been idiotic.

This is just ridiculous. But if that many people are ‘horrified’, then you’ve done your child no favours. They have to live with it.

A thread about someone who’s named their kid a shit name?

over and out. Who even cares. OP clearly thinks their child is something special to have created a post about their (no doubt kids super shit name).

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 10:38

Yes, a name that people have no particular reactions to or opinions on - whether or not they would have chosen the name for their children - is the exact opposite of a Marmite name.

It's like calling Jack or Olivia Marmite names.

Why do you need to know the name? It's not a post about whether or not we were unreasonable to choose the name. Its about where iabu to find it amusing when people are confused/rude 🤷🏼‍♀️

FWIW it's not particularly out there at all, I'm sure you'd be highly disappointed if I revealed the name.
