What exactly is wrong with people today?

Constant posts about "over-entitled" children - why do parents not set boundaries.
Everyone seems to have "anxiety" - wanting to do your best in a job of at an interview is normal.
Climate change, yes, this is important, so look at how much the internet has an influence.
Cost of food, stop buying at supermarkets. Get to know your local providers. Definitely stop buying ready meals and cook your own.
Nobody owes you a living and the current government definitely will not bail you out. Stop relying on the 1997 to 2010 run of idiot "socialists" that knackered the country, sold off our gold reserves and created this total mess!
Get educated, if you are intelligent. Learn a skill or trade. Allegedly there are loads of opportunities.
A house is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Where, in any economic theory, does it state that property values must rise?
Or just be a grumpy old lady, like me?

Thank you Baby Boomer (who had a blessed youth) for telling the younger generation all that is wrong and how to fix it.

If only you had spoken up sooner (or we had not heard the same patronising lecture from many others of your generation)....

100% agree

i grew up in an idyllic setting in the country. we knew all the local grocers and butchers. we worked hard and now enjoy the fruit of our labours

my DH also had similar background and we now have a couple of places and know all the local delis and butchers. they even give us a hamper at Xmas for all the business we give them in the year.

but none of this was given to us. we worked hard, and got a small inheritance which we made work for us.

Your inheritance was given to you.

You had something handed to you on a plate. Like him. So dont kid yourself you haven't had a hand up.

You were indeed fortunate. Inheritance might have helped a bit - I rather suspect that was given to you, wasn’t it?
It would be lovely to see aspiring young families living locally, foraging for mushrooms and blackberries, keeping chickens and making ricotta with unpasteurised milk from the local jersey herd.
Sadly it won’t happen for most young people. The average price of a terraced house is £538,628 in our wider area. If you want a mortgage on that you’d need an income of over £110k, I believe. Outside the abilities of most without inheritance, even if the work very hard.

What socialists? Did I miss socialists in power? Been voting since the 60s but I don't remember any socialists. Vaguely woolly lefty governments of varying levels of achievement but I don't remember anything that could be called doctrinaire socialism.

What an utterly bonkers and deluded post OP. Fancy you thinking local shops are cheaper than supermarkets. So sweet.

LOL I am not a boomer, whatever that is.
I have been widowed for nearly 19 years with no pension, apart from my widow's pension and no opportunity to ameliorate the situation as I had to pay off the house.
However, I have never relied upon anyone to "bail me out". Just got on with the job.

Go you.

@FelicityFlops so if ALL of the current troubles are the cause of the preceding Labour government, then what you are saying is that the Conservatives have had no impact AT ALL in the last 12 years? Wow that makes them even more ineffectual than I thought. 😬

Oh dear OP you have gone and done it now 😂, some one told MN to take responsibility for their own life's. If you don't self loath yourself for being British and dont hate any one who try's to better themself without hand-outs your now welcome.

God forbid you might not be leftwing or a socialist. That would make you an ist! Common sense and taking accountability for your own family and actions has pretty much been lost in today's world much like the dodo. If you don't claim your not in the game on MN bingo 😂😂😂

What fun!
We take responsibility for ourselves and many others besides. Rarely had a day off work. Never claimed benefits- didn’t even get child benefit in later stages of parenthood. Our children likewise are hard-working and have established comfortable lives for themselves through education and effort. We are very lucky to have been able to do that.

We are socialist - albeit champagne socialists. We believe that socialism is better for everyone because polarising wealth costs too much, undermines society and fails to allow us to develop that meritocracy that enabled us to reap the rewards of a free education, world-leading healthcare and a more compassionate community. We want our higher rate taxes to go towards rebuilding the public services destroyed over the last ten years not to those profiteering from Tory dodgy dealings and insider trading.

I’ve lived under a Labour government with the huge benefits that brought and the significant achievement. Earlier governments have delivered much that we’ve all (including OP) benefitted from.

  • the permanent ending of the death penalty
  • the establishment of the NHS
  • the establishment of social security
  • The Wheatley Act and social housing reform
  • decriminalisation of homosexuality,
  • legislation to outlaw racial discrimination
  • the establishment of the Open University.

Between 1997 and 2010 the benefits are tangible
  • Longest period of sustained low inflation since the 60s.
  • Low mortgage rates.
  • Introduced the National Minimum Wage and raised it to £5.52.
  • Over 14,000 more police in England and Wales.
  • Cut overall crime by 32 per cent.
  • Record levels of literacy and numeracy in schools.
  • Young people achieving some of the best ever results at 14, 16, and 18.
  • Funding for every pupil in England doubled.
  • Employment is at its highest level ever.
  • Written off up to 100 per cent of debt owed by poorest countries.
  • 85,000 more nurses.
  • 32,000 more doctors.
  • Devolved power to the Scottish Parliament.
  • Devolved power to the Welsh Assembly.
  • paternity leave of 2 weeks for the first time.
  • NHS Direct offering free convenient patient advice.
  • Gift aid was worth £828 million to charities last year.
  • Restored city-wide government to London.
  • Record number of students in higher education.
  • Child benefit up 26 per cent since 1997.
  • Delivered 2,200 Sure Start Children’s Centres.
  • Introduced the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
  • £200 winter fuel payment to pensioners & up to £300 for over-80s.
  • Exceeded Kyoto target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Restored devolved government to Northern Ireland.
  • Over 36,000 more teachers in England and 274,000 more support staff and teaching assistants.
  • All full time workers given a right to 24 days paid holiday.
  • A million pensioners lifted out of poverty.
  • 600,000 children lifted out of relative poverty.
  • Introduced child tax credit giving more money to parents.
  • Scrapped Section 28 and introduced Civil Partnerships.
  • Brought over 1 million social homes up to standard.
  • Inpatient waiting lists down by over half a million.
  • Banned fox hunting.
  • Cleanest rivers, beaches, drinking water and air since before the industrial revolution.
  • Free TV licences for over-75s.
  • Banned fur farming and the testing of cosmetics on animals.
  • Free breast cancer screening for all women aged between 50-70.
  • Free off peak local bus travel for over-60s.
  • New Deal – helped over 1.8 million people into work.
  • Over 3 million child trust funds started.
  • Free eye test for over 60s.
  • More than doubled the number of apprenticeships.
  • Free entry to national museums and galleries.
  • Overseas aid budget more than doubled.
  • Heart disease deaths down by 150,000 and cancer deaths down by 50,000.
  • Cut long-term youth unemployment by 75 per cent.
  • Free nursery places for every three and four-year-olds.
  • Free fruit for most four to six-year-olds at school.

Can someone remind me why people voted for the corrupt, self- serving club that is now our government? Is it because their accents are more acceptable than Ms Rayners?

I'm genuinely dead curious. If nobody owes the OP a living, how come they appear to have subsisted on a widow's pension and a house presumably paid off by their spouse's salary?? I'm also surmising from their likely age that they probably got their education free too...

On a serious note I sincerely hope they've found their meds since they posted....

You've got to be kidding... Supporting your local providers is lovely and all that, but cheaper?! Not a chance!

Our local market is usually cheaper than Lidl for vegetables. It doesn't last long though... needs eating within 2 days.
