AIBU?

To not understand caffiene drinkers

Frazzld · 05/10/2022 10:02

I had a cup of tea yesterday at 10am.
I was still having palpitations at midnight, and was wide awake. Didn't sleep until 1am.
Is it just me who is this crazy sensitive to caffiene? How do so many people chug coffee all day and not have any problems?

I'll never forget the time I had an energy drink at the library once when I was at uni, and had to go home shortly afterwards to lie down!

I've become sensitive to caffeine
I only have decaf now and not very often
Starbucks made a mistake once and I ended up in hospital for 24 hrs

I don't get it , I could drink it for 30 plus years and then suddenly not

Am I the only one that's feels relaxed and happy after a sugar free redbull or coffee?

Don't drink coffee as I don't like it. Very occasionally drink an energy drink. I Love tea and probably consume maybe 7/8 mugs a day. It doesn't affect my sleep at all regardless of when I drink it. Probably have my last cup around 10 on average.

My husband is the same as you OP, if he has any caffeine at all his heart rate goes mad and he can’t sleep. He even has to be careful with things like ice cream and chocolates as things like truffles can have caffeine in them. I on the other hand can drink caffeine to my hearts content!

I drink coffee or tea through the day and can switch between caffeinated and decaff without noticing. It has no effect on me.

There are links between adult ADHD and caffeine not having an effect on you!

I drink coffee and tea and also have adhd,

caffeine has no effect on me at all.

I have very little sensitivity to caffeine. I can chug strong coffee and energy drinks all day and I’m fine. When my wee boy was in the sick kids I drank a crate of red bull every two days to get me through coz you weren’t allowed hot drinks in the ward and I wouldn’t leave him and I did get the shakes after midnight most nights but mostly I’m fine. I don’t get folk that can drink things like chamomile or elderberry and not get the vom

I wish caffeine had that effect on me! I have a 10 week old baby so no matter how many coffees I drink during the day, I can still sleep at the first opportunity I get. I think my body is made up of 90% caffeine right now 🤣

I can't drink caffeine after about 11am, coffee or tea. My pal takes a coffee to bed with her at night 😃

I drink around 7-8 cups a day always have one before bed but I have adhd and it makes me tired not alert. Coffee and Red Bull are the worst for me as they make me feel extremely tired very quickly, so I avoid them.

I'm fine with tea (though I don't drink it after about 4pm unless decaf). But I have totally given up proper coffee and only occasionally drink the odd cup of decaf, as even that can affect me a bit. Proper coffee makes me unbearably jittery and anxious, upsets my stomach a bit and makes me unable to get to sleep at night, even if I drink it in the morning! It's only the last few years I've had this though.

I used to have a cup of tea before bed but now I can't touch the stuff.

YABU, simply because you can understand that everyone is different. I drink black coffee, never instant, 3 or 4 large ones a day so around 12-16 shots of coffee. I don’t drink it beyond about 4pm but I do have the odd energy drink. I sleep fine, I think I concentrate better with coffee tbh!

I love my coffee and have at least several cups a day. Have for years, the only time I really cut back is when I was pregnant.

Goodness you do seems sensitive. I have to be careful about caffeine as it seems to aggravate my silent reflux. But I love the boost of tea with caffeine first thing in the morning and it doesn't keep me awake even if I have coffee late.

Some people are much more susceptible than others. I think a lot of it is genetic

Report
Calandor · 05/10/2022 13:43

Because obviously it doesn't affect most people that much. I have about two coffees a day and have never had the shakes. Doesn't even wake me up that much I just like the taste

Genetics also can play a part. I have the gene variants that mean caffeine is fine and doesn’t disrupt my sleep. Good thing as I am another one who was starting the day aged 8 with a mug of coffee (black in my case as I was a daddy’s girl and that was how he drank it 😬). www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/news-daylight-saving-time-coffee-caffeine-genes-dna

As others have said, the less you drink, the more sensitive you are. I drink about 5/6 cups of coffee a day and a few energy drinks. I still feel shattered by bedtime. You have it better! I wish I could give up. I'd rather not be hooked.

Report
bingbummy · 05/10/2022 13:14

The energy drinks are so very strong. I became addicted to them at one point. When you stop, you get terrible headaches.

I'm a drug addict. Caffeine is really underestimated in its potency, and its side-effects.

I drink coffee every morning to wake me up, I'm a literal zombie until my first cup. It's not good! I'm not going to stop though. But I am wholly dependent on this drug. If my Tassimo broke I'd do bad things for money to buy a new one that same day.

My DH is exactly the same as you! When I met him he told me he was an insomniac and hadn't ever really slept but aha! I few months later after I had pointed out that it might'be been caused by the caffeine, he'd detoxed fully and couldn't believe he could actually sleep through the night. He totally avoids it now, even cocoa/chocolate affects him too.
I'm not as sensitive but once had one of those caffeine energy gels on a bike ride and had to pull over to vomit behind a hedge not long after.

Have read, and broadly would concur with, that better coffee doesn't sketch you out in the same way. And it's too do with pesticides and other impurities at the point of roasting.

I find stuff like Costa and Nero I can have a couple or 3 drinks a day (so 4-6 shots) and that's okay but if I have more than that I don't feel very good. I don't have super extended buzz effect but I feel pretty skittish and uncomfortable and get moreso if I drink more coffee.

At home I have nice coffee, and I can drink quite a lot more in apparent caffeine content without the same negatives. I get more of a buzz from it but it's a buzz that keeps building rather than branching out into sketch feelings

It has always confused me how people can be so sensitive to caffeine. I never understood the people who would say to me (usually while I was sipping on an espresso at 10pm after dinner) "oh how can you have caffeine so late? If I did that I'd be up all night." I thought what the hell are they on about?

But then I learnt about 3 years ago that I have ADHD. More often than not, for people with ADHD caffeine has a calming effect on the brain. So does not keep us wide awake at all. It helps us to relax and can also help us to concentrate. But it does not keep us awake like it does most other people. I used to drink 3-4 cups of strong coffee in the mornings and 1-2 cups before bed. Now that I'm on medication I generally don't need the coffee to relax and focus, but I still have 2 cups in the morning before my medication and a cup in the evening after the kids are in bed and before I go to bed. It helps me sleep 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't drink any caffeine at all, even first thing in the morning. It makes me feel dreadful - anxious and spaced out at the same time. It's definitely an individual thing!

I arrive at work at 7am and as I arrive a man next to my school leaves his flat. He has a red bull in one hand and a spliff in the other. I’m thinking I might join him because my tea and muesli aren’t much cop.
