To feel guilty having a day in the house on the hottest day of the year?

I have an 8 year old daughter. We have been busy out the house doing different things all week. Today I'd decided to have a day in the house to do some housework. Have done a bit but mostly been lying on the sofa roasting. Daughter claims she's bored unless she's sat glued to a phone screen.

I feel really guilty being stuck in the house but don't know what else to do. It's too hot for the park and I honestly don't have the energy today to be playing at the park, we've been busy everyday this week and tomorrow we will be busy again. Should I just suck it up and take her somewhere since it is the hottest day of the year or should we just stay home?

YANBU - it's very hot out there today.

Give her a list of chores to do next time she complains - she'll either find something else to do or you'll get the housework done. Win win! Grin

I certainly wouldn't be handling over a phone to her because she's bored.
being 'bored' becomes a habit, kids need a degree of boredom to work things out for themselves. fgs don't feel guilty about it. You've tried but don't beat yourself up. Give her some chores.

I would be on the beach or at the nearest pool!

@TotorosCatBus

I bet that if you have her a list of household chores then you'd find that she's not as bored as she says

This. Then when she's done a few, put a film on you can both watch.

I'm not taking my DC anywhere, it's way too hot and we burn too easily!

We write a physical list of ideas and if they don't want to do a single thing on the list, there is always bedroom tidying.

Mine are pretty good if they see I am genuinely busy. But they turn into hyenas if I dare to sit down and have a cuppa.

You're not being mean at all. It's a siesta day. If you can chuck money at the problem then I'd suggest a stationers for puzzle books, sketch book or scrap book, or paddling pool/water slide/sprinkler for the garden.

Take her to a supermarket to choose some ice cream it's guaranteed to be nice and cold in there and it will kill some time.

Close the curtains and stick Disney on all day.

I would stay home if I were you, and I wouldn’t feel guilty at all. Sounds like you need to re-charge your batteries if you’ve been busy. Also sounds like your Dd just isn’t used to having nothing to do so a quiet day shouldn’t do her any harm. Enjoy!

That's exactly what we did, just back. Got plenty of ice lollies and ice and she seems a bit happier.

Does anyone else lost their appetite in this weather? She's happily munching a ham sandwich and the thought of proper food makes me feel 🤢

We are having an inside day. My son has just turned 3 and had an epic bout of tantrums whilst out for breakfast with my dad this morning. We have cancelled swimming this afternoon, drawn the curtains, put on the fan and are laid on the sofa. I don’t feel guilty at all.

Guilt is a misplaced emotion here, really it is.

It's too hot. Lots of other days in the holidays when it's cooler

Personally I think low key chores, with breaks for cold drinks/salad and a sit down indoors are the way to go in this heat.

That way when you feel more comfortable about going out, you will be able to return to an organised place and relax.

It's important to be organised at home, especially with food etc. You will be setting a good example.

Let her be bored! It’s good for her to have to come up with something to do.

Nah don't feel guilty. I can't enjoy a day out in this heat unless there is an outdoor pool, seaside not too packed and with some shade and/or air conditioned bar involved

all that is a bit much to ask for on a hot day in the uk, everywhere too packed

I put a big paddling pool in the garden but even with a cover it turned into a popular suicide spot for hoverflies and spiders so I felt guilty and drained it.

sticking to eating ice cream indoors now

Let her be bored and then she will have to figure out a way to entertain herself !!
No good keeping kids busy all the time it does them
Good to use their imagination! X

Let her be bored. I really don’t get why people think The Hottest Day of the Year is an occasion that needs to be marked rather than the uncomfortable inconvenience it is.

My stock response to my 8 year old is “well find something to do then”. I’m not a fecking Redcoat.

You don't need to be out every day op. Today is far to hot to be queuing to get in places etc etc. My ds had a couple of hours on his xbox this morning, he's played with some toys, we've done some baking and he is now playing in the garden on his slip and slid, while I hide in the shade.

We barely go out in this heat. This week has been paddling pool in the garden and watching films in front of fans

I've done exactly the same with DS who is 2. We've been to the beach everyday this week and today I just wanted to sit in and get on with some housework.

We don't have a garden so once it cools down he will go play football in the field close to our home when DP gets home from work.

I don’t ever remember being entertained. She will find something to do.
