AIBU?

To think they should have reduced the price of the shoes in Tesco?

A pair of childrens shoes from tesco, they were the last pair in my sons size and there was some damage to them.

By damage I mean messy glue around the joins and some black marks which looked like permanent marker on the white of the shoe which didn't budge when I tried to clean it with a wipe.

I took them to a till and explained that they were the last pair on the shelf in that size and asked if the store would consider selling them at a reduced rate because they're not in great condition. The woman on the till quite bluntly said no. I said no problem I'll put them back then.

As I turned to return them to the aisle she called over her supervisor and repeated my request to her, to which she said to me "well we're not going to reduce, there's not much wrong with them is there" in a really shitty tone.

Was I being unreasonable? As far as I was aware it was common practice to sell damaged stock at a reduced rate, and if not common practice then a gesture of good will.

Was I being unreasonable?

I'm not sure they'd be allowed to reduce them. In a small independent shop they would. In Tesco they probably need to get permission from someone like store manager or department manager and they might not be there on a Sunday.
Perhaps they thought you were being shitty and cheeky so shut it down by firmly saying no.
Move on, what else can you do?

I don't think the glue was damage per se, just poor quality shoes to start with. I suspect the rest of the line that had already sold would be the same. They're only going to put on sale if they can't sell at full price.

What were they charging?

Tesco's always have a shelf where the things reduced becuaebof damage are. A 6 pack of cokes with one missing, an opened multipack of crisps, a squashed cereal box.

This will be where the shoes end up (in the clothing dept equivalent) so why shouldn't op ask?

You're embarrassed that they didn't say yes, fair enough. But don't try to deflect that onto the staff.

I'm embarrassed because of the way they spoke to me.

A simple "I'm sorry we can't do that" with a smile would have been well received on my part.

It was the black marks that were the main issue, I wouldn't have minded the glue by itself but the combination of the two meant the shoes were nowhere near perfect condition.

They weren't expensive, around £14 if I recall correctly but it was the principle.

If in England, probably making the most of shoe shops being closed.

"I don't expect them to reduce the shoes (although I think they should have done..." errr??

It's weird they didn't reduce them. I've asked lots of times. Usually say something like "do you have another one in this size because this one has a mark on it?" If they do I buy that, but if not then usually they offer 10%o off on the basis that it's sold as seen and no refund. When I worked in retail about 20 years ago we were allowed to give 10% off to anyone who asked, if something was damaged.

Were they actually rude, or are you just calling them rude because they didn't surround their response to you in empty fluff?

Thinking somebody should do something and expecting them to aren't mutually exclusive.

I think Trump should take himself off to a remote island with no internet connection and stay there indefinitely, I don't expect him to do it.

They were rude and abrupt.

You don't need to fluff your words to be polite.

Ah, yes, I see you have started a thread to bitch about them because they didn't add pointless fluff to their response. They weren't rude.

So you might want to ask one of the admins to change the title of your thread. It’s not about the price of the shoes, it’s about the way they spoke to you. Although I suspect you are one of the many people who can’t tell the difference between rudeness and not getting the answer you were hoping for. Retail staff can’t do right for doing wrong as far as some people are concerned. If they had smiled when they said “no” to the discount request people would be saying they were being sarcastic or patronizing.

Pour yourself a drink and forget about it. I’m sure the assistant and the supervisor have already.

Oldest trick in the book to produce a "last pair happens to be damaged, please can I have a refund." Customers aren't above damaging stock themselves for that, especially something like black mark on the sole where it doesn't matter.

I tend to go for the "could you see if there is another pair available in this size because I don't want the damaged stock". Sometimes then they'll offer you a discount, and then you can choose if you want it for that or not.

How do you know you couldn’t remove the mark with a wipe? You didn’t buy them. Did you take a wild to a pair of shoes that weren’t yours? You could have damaged them even further.

I think it's possible OP didn't 'wipe' it using a using a baseball bat with nails and broken glass driven into it.

You aren't ENTITLED to a reduction. It's their stock, their choice. Buy from somewhere else.

Also, OP. The sky is blue. HTH.

They probably think you're cheeky for asking for a reduction because of a bit of glue and a mark, hence the attitude.

OP, was the person who served you in a floral print dress? Did she mention that her sister Violet has a Mercedes, swimming pool and room for a pony? Did her name badge say 'Hyacinth' on it. If so this is definitely why she was arsey. Be warned- I'm pretty sure this person has several hundred accounts on MN.

If you don't like it, move your custom elsewhere.

Or just get on with your day. Either is fine.

So all this is about the way you were spoken to, nothing else? Are you normally so sensitive? Or were you just having a bad day?

OP is insufficiently sensitive. This is MN, she's supposed to be incandescent with rage when someone is a bit rude, not mildly irritated.

These aren't the same shoes but similar, the black marker marks were on the toe area where I've scribbled red is where It was.

I wouldn't care about a few marks on the sole.

Was thinking the same.

OP, you asked a totally reasonable question that could have been refused without implying you were a CF for asking.

I seriously can't believe the shite that's being written here. No op you weren't wrong or entitled or whatever shite is being written. I work in a supermarket and have done throughout and yes we do sometimes get a bit sharp but I nearly always realise and apologize. Manners cost nothing even when stressed. Customers and staff can both be arseholes. On this occasion it wasn't the op being a twat.

I expect that after all the unreasonable entitled requests they get, they are probably not allowed to give discretion.

Read some of the threads that those working in retail have contributed to, as examples.

I notice that despite your title and your actual post asking if they should have reduced the shoes you've changed tack to complaining about their attitude now that almost unanimously you've been old YWU to expect a reduction. Maybe you should have been clear from the start what your issue was.

They weren’t annoyed with you but the hundreds of other chancers who ask for discounts in a less polite way or deliberately cause damage to request a discount. It’s not unreasonable to ask. Presuming they were cheap the glue is probably to be expected. I don’t shop at Tesco as I find the customer service worse than other supermarkets.
