To cook bacon in the oven?

Gobbycop · 17/10/2020 10:03

I don't mean under a grill in the oven.

I mean in the oven (electric) on 200° on a grill pan with foil under the wire the bacon is on.

Then I can just get on with other things (making coffee and other breakfast fare) while it slowly cooks.

Am I the only wrongun that cooks bacon in this slightly bizarre and probably non cost effective way?

My oven is used daily for almost everything, hob rarely.

Sausages, bacon, black pudding, mushroons - very hot oven. Fried bread (spread with dipping at throw into very hot oven for last 5 mins). Also in oven.

I have a cast iron griddle and it's used daily. Get it really hot before you start is my tip.

Hob only used to fry or scramble eggs.

Also cook gammon steaks, pork chops etc in oven.

I do it in a frying pan if it's just for me as it's quicker. But I do fish fingers in the oven because you don't have to watch them like you do on the grill.

I do potato waffles in the toaster because it's quicker than the oven. I tried microwaving bacon but it took ages to get crisp, so I just fry it instead.

ToastyFingers · 17/10/2020 11:01

This is how we do it in work to make 100s of bacon sarnies.

Ironfloor269 · 17/10/2020 11:03

This is how I do English breakfast for my family on a Sunday morning. Bacon, sausages and hash browns in the oven, scrambled eggs on hob, toast in toaster and baked beans in microwave. 😊

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/10/2020 11:05

Never even considered this (although I do cook sausages in the oven). I will definitely try it.

StCharlotte · 17/10/2020 11:09

@ponygirlcurtis

Me too. I sometimes pop halved mushrooms under the rashers too. No messy cooker top to clean up.
Ooh - stealing this!
londonscalling · 17/10/2020 11:25

Never cooked mushrooms in the oven though. Do you add a little oil?

AriettyHomily · 17/10/2020 11:28

Always do and sausages. Less mess and I don't have to watch the pan.

ZarkingBell · 17/10/2020 11:59

Great way to cook bacon and sausages. Never use foil though.

AssCants · 17/10/2020 12:02

Absolutely.

I pop another baking tray on top to to create perfectly flat crispy stripy bacon 😍

AssCants · 17/10/2020 12:03

Like a bacon sandwich but with baking trays iyswim?

AnxMummy10 · 17/10/2020 12:06

I Do this in the airfryer, but its the same thing. No smell and cleaning!

Rowgtfc72 · 17/10/2020 12:07

Cant beat a good oven up!

Inextremis · 17/10/2020 12:10

I do mine in the halogen oven - takes 12mins, turns out great, no mess, no fuss :)

Gobbycop · 17/10/2020 13:00

Great,

Thanks for the replies, glad it's not just me.

Some other good tips picked up too 🙂

Wrapping in grease proof paper and microwaving will give you soft bacon which is nice in a sandwich.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 17/10/2020 13:05

I had never heard of cooking bacon in the oven... inspired! Thank you. Grin

opinionatedfreak · 17/10/2020 13:33

I do it this way too.

I picked it up as a habit from friends who grew up in houses with aga/rayburns. Wouldn't go back.

Currently seeking the holy grail of a pan to cook back on in that fits in my dishwasher as i hate washing up the greasy oven tray...

mrsbyers · 17/10/2020 14:03

Streaky bacon cooked between two flat trays makes those beautiful crisp bacon shards that supermarket sell for a small fortune

ThistleWitch · 17/10/2020 20:22

@YouveGotMeWhosGotYou

Poor things. For you it's a meal, but for them, its their life. Sad
What?
Babypug · 17/10/2020 20:33

Microwave bacon... my mum and dad always did it this way and it was disgusting!
I mean cooking raw pork in the microwave when there is an oven and or a hob is available is mind boggling.
I will never revert back to their crazy ways

Megan2018 · 17/10/2020 20:38

I use the oven when doing bacon for lots of people- often Boxing Day I have 40+ rashers to do.
For just me I grill/fry but oven is great!

Vector5 · 17/10/2020 20:48

Always do it in the oven. Much crisper.

liveitwell · 17/10/2020 20:59

Who cares. If it works, it works.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/10/2020 09:49

@Gobbycop

Tried this and I'm now a convert - brilliant tip, many thanks Grin.
