AIBU?

Holiday cottage asked to take rubbish to tip?

Bluepolkadots42 · 07/08/2020 16:31

We have just begun a UK SC holiday as a family. Upon arrival we were asked to dispose of all our rubbish at the local tip? The owner has said this is part of their covid measures. DH are a bit confused as to why we cant use wheelie bins and let bin men take stuff? We can't understand why we need to take time out of our holiday to visit a tip. Also our local tip is stringently checking people's proof of addresses if you want to access it and it doesn't take general household bins (to my knowledge) only stuff that can be recycled including electronic goods, white goods etc. I know we have driven 2.5hrs from our area to be on this holiday so perhaps this area has very freely available tips. AIBU to think this request is OTT and grossly inconvenient for us? Wanted to check with others in case we are being total CFs for querying this.

Just wheelie bin it and if they complain, just say you assumed they meant 'big unusual waste', not regular trash. Go for the ignorant approach.

Unreasonable and weird request. Out in bins outside yes that’s fine. I wouldn’t be doing what they’ve said how ridiculous.

Not reasonable. I stayed in an Airbnb and they just asked that we took the bin bags out to the rubbish bins outside ourselves rather than leave them to be changed like they normally would.

Unless your hosts planning on ripping open your bin bags and rooting around in their dustbins I don’t see how it’s a covid risk for them.

Just say no, you'll be using the bins as usual. You won't be packing your car full of rubbish, assuming you can even find the room amongst all your things on the way home, and assuming you could even get an appointment slot at the local tip. Just no.

Their problem to deal with. You've already paid for the privilege frankly.

We’ve just come back from a rented cottage in the lakes. There was a plastic dustbin outside for our waste And bin bags provided. There wasn’t a wheelie bin because I assume collection is on specific days and you wouldn’t want to share a used bin with previous occupiers. The letting agent rep tied the dustbin when we left.

It was all very acceptable.

They're dodging council tax on second homes. Fuck that.

@Bluepolkadots42 @Madcats is right, that's the reason my tight arse friends of friends don't have a bin, it's not council tax, it's business waste and they are too tight to pay it!!! Yes it's in Cornwall.

It's not right though is it, cheapskates!!!

As part of the 'removing all unnecessary bits' from our holiday cottage they have taken away all the instructions and the welcome pack so I have no idea what to do with the rubbish Hmm I do know I have to strip and bag all the bedding and the towels and be out at 9am though.

It wouldn't sting so much if the plates in the cupboard weren't caked with food, there wasn't food under the dining table and coffee table nor toothpaste in the sink when we checked in at 6pm.

CF's.
1,200 and it doesn't include waste.
Do as you suggest OP.
Bag it. Leave it. Tell them it wasn't possible.
Would they expect you to bring it home in your car?
It would go in my review.
No problem at all stripping beds.

My X BIL has a house in the country which we used regularly and we had to take rubbish to the tip as it was very isolated and rubbish collection was not frequent. nothing to do with Covid.

Just bag your rubbish up well and put in the bins the same as anyone would who lives there. You are living there for a while anyway. It's too ridiculous for words to expect people to drive to a tip.
@Royalbiscuit no it didn't. Owner is super lovely so I am very loathe to cause any awkwardness/conflict as we do just want to enjoy our holiday... but it seems general consensus is in line with our thoughts that this is a ridiculous request.
Forget an put it for now. Enjoy your holiday. At the end say unfortunately you can't go to the tip. Leave rubbish bagged up in wheelies or next to.

Covid or no Covid, self catering hosts are becoming increasingly unreasonable especially considering how much they charge. If I wanted to spend my holiday cleaning, I'd stay at home.

We let holiday chalets in the South West. We are not making special requests with regards to guests rubbish linked to COVID. However, our accommodation is located on a holiday park and rubbish collection is part of the service charges under lease agreements. For freehold properties like a cottage it may be registered as council tax second home/ holiday home (with limited annual occupation) or business rates if occupancy is for sufficient weeks in the year. For the former, there may not be a rubbish collection offered by the council. For the latter, owners are supposed to use a private rubbish collection service (I do this on a second home that is not let out commercially). It is not cheap so I guess this is why your landlord is requesting your rubbish is taken away. Most areas have recycling skips available for card, bottles and so forth. These are often in supermarket or council car parks and a search on google will send you to the right address. While it is a pain to do this on holiday, it would cut down a lot of your rubbish at exit-day if you get rid of some that way.

@justasking111 it's not an air bnb request. We just returned from one and just had to empty bins and put rubbish in the wheelie bins and recycling which we were happy to do.

The thing is, had you known, would you have booked this cottage? Odds on not. You can also contact Airbnb, can’t you?

Some waste and recycling centres will only accept things from local residents so you might not even be allowed to take any rubbish there. But it is a ridiculous request, regardless.

They're CFs - they, or whoever is managing the place for them, should be taking the rubbish to the tip or putting it in their own bins. They are definitely dodging charges for rubbish removal.

Google the local tip so that you are certain you can't access it - but I wouldn't do it either. What would happen if you didn't drive?

We went to a cottage once and there were no bins at all outside. Whenever we went out we used to dump a small carrier bag in a litter bin. There were paper recycling bins at the supermarket. We never got an answer as to why they didn't have wheelie bins.

They’d not be allowed to use the tip in Devon as it’s business waste if they took it to the tip. So maybe they want to avoid something similar?

Report
eatsleepread · 08/08/2020 19:25

I wouldn't do it and YANBU, but I would be very upfront with them about this. At least that way they'll know what to expect, and can arrange to collect it if necessary.

Have a lovely time! Smile
