Holiday cottage asked to take rubbish to tip?

We have just begun a UK SC holiday as a family. Upon arrival we were asked to dispose of all our rubbish at the local tip? The owner has said this is part of their covid measures. DH are a bit confused as to why we cant use wheelie bins and let bin men take stuff? We can't understand why we need to take time out of our holiday to visit a tip. Also our local tip is stringently checking people's proof of addresses if you want to access it and it doesn't take general household bins (to my knowledge) only stuff that can be recycled including electronic goods, white goods etc. I know we have driven 2.5hrs from our area to be on this holiday so perhaps this area has very freely available tips. AIBU to think this request is OTT and grossly inconvenient for us? Wanted to check with others in case we are being total CFs for querying this.

@MistyMinge2 exactly! I don't think we would fit any bin bags into our car tbh even if we wanted to- it was such a squeeze fitting everything in coming down here.

I could maybe understand the precaution if you had dirty nappies. But apart from that, general waste is not particularly hazardous.

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee hmmm I have assumed they do but perhaps they don't?? Still don't see why we should be inconvenienced because owner too tight to pay for bin collections! They can't be short of a bob or two when they're renting out for £1200/week... that's more than our monthly mortgage payment!

Last time we went to our local tip it had to be on a specific day, we had to show confirmation of our address and we STILL had to queue for an hour and a half...so YANBU, I would not do that.

I'd be fed up at having to clean it too, given I stay in a hotel every week who don't make you do the same.

The hotel staff are just wearing gloves and a mask, which any owner could do, and while you clean up, you are touching everything??? Makes no sense at all.

@Mummyoflittledragon well we will have dirty nappies... our toddler isn't yet toilet trained. We have nappy bags though to put them in and then putting them in a bin bag they're essentially double bagged.

How often are the wheely bins emptied? Our area is now doing 3 weekly collection, so maybe the owners are thinking that 3 weeks worth of rubbish outside the holiday let would be bad for business.

Lol. The irony. Mind you no one is being told they can’t dispose of nappies in the general waste. You could maybe flush the poo, double bag and tell the owner? The last thing you would want to be doing is driving around with stinky nappies in your car looking for the recycling centre.

Ours is local addresses only and booked up about 3 week's in advance.

Same here, and you have to show proof of address. They also record your car details.

We had to leave at 9am, strip beds, clean and air cottage etc
we were not advised to go to the local tip ffs!

Probably paying business rates (or in fact not paying anything as they get a small business exemption) and so as they don’t pay council tax they don’t get bin collections unless they pay.

How bizzare! I'm bemused at being told we must clean our cottage on departure, strip the beds, leave it as we found it etc because of Covid, whilst vacating an hour at 10 am. I'm wondering if I should set my alarm for 5am.

Your bed linen is contaminated so has to be taken in entirety to laundry service, you have to leave early because cleaners have to do a double deep clean, then leave vacant before next visitor. This was done before your visit. Your are being unreasonable.

Ridiculous. They're checking addresses here too - mainly because we have four council areas within easy reach and they want to check you're going to the "right" one.

These Covid measures have given people carte blanche to go a bit bonkers. Even if changeover day is Saturday, and the bins aren't uplifted until Tuesday, what "risk" is your rubbish to the next guests? Zero risk.

People have just gone so OTT with this sort of thing.

Our local tip has a sticker system where they sent each household a vinyl thing you attach to your windscreen to prove you are a local resident.

Now with Covid it works on an appointment system which you have to book at least a week in advance.

I think it is shit they have requested you do this, almost as bad as being asked to take your rubbish home with you!

Can you contact the owner to ask whether the local tip will allow you to use it and whether it takes normal household waste? That might make her think, if this is a new system she’s come up with but hasn’t thought through?

they don’t get bin collections unless they pay.
if they're charging £1200 a WEEK they can afford to pay someone to empty the bin, even if it isn't the council.

Totally unreasonable - the tip isn’t even really meant for everyday rubbish is it? Ours is really a recycling centre - they do take general rubbish but it all has to be sorted before you go. What a faff for a week’s worth of stuff in summer, stinking your car out.

It is advice an order given by booking.com airbnb, for the reassurance of all renters, believe me filling in sheets for cleaners to adhere to, cleaning everything, light switches, door handles, in fact every bloody surface. Plus pillow protectors, plus spare pillows so new guests get pillows that have been out of circulation for a week. £60 to process linen, £50 -£60 for cleaners to do double deep clean. Basically holidays lets are following the same procedure as nursing homes do. All to protect you the customer.

I can understand stripping the beds, and 'leaving it us you found it', as in not leaving a mess.

However, I don't think the owner should be assuming that you will clean, because apart from anything else they won't be able to tell how you have cleaned.

I’d take small carrier bags of rubbish to public bins every day. I don’t think you are generally allowed to do this from your own home but you’d be on holiday with no other means of disposal.

We are operating the waste permit system, so bring your permit number with you if you have a van or trailer.
No more than two people should be in the car and no children are allowed.
Where younger children can’t stay at home, they will be allowed to travel in but they must not get out of the car
It is your own responsibility to adhere to the two-metres social distancing when on the site. Be considerate towards others using the site
Site staff will not be able to help you with the unloading or lifting of items.
You must do this yourself or to have a second person with you to help with heavy or bulky items
To help prevent people travelling from areas outside of XXX we may ask you for evidence of your address – so bring a recent utility bill or council tax bill with you
Waste from households containing people who have Covid-19 symptoms should be double bagged and left for 72 hours before being brought to site
Anyone using abusive language or intimidating behaviour towards site staff or other people will be asked to leave
Traffic management system
Sites will be operating on a ‘one out, one in’ basis, so your waiting times may be significantly longer than usual
Once on site, all vehicles must be parked at least two metres away from the next one
At the X site only we are restricting access based on the last number of your number plate.
Number plates where the last number is even i.e 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 will be given access to the site on alternate days starting from Friday 10 July.

Number plates on which the last number is odd i.e 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be given access on alternate days from Saturday 11 July.^

We were asked to do the same when we went to Wales last summer, we didn't know at the time of booking. It was a total pain in the arse, my Dad ended up massively stressed about it & he ended up going to the tip with a fully packed car + stinking rubbish because he was worried about bad feedback being left (air bnb). Such a shame as it put a downer on the trip to an otherwise lovely place.

Are you down in Cornwall OP? I seem to remember that second homes' refuse is counted as "Business Waste" so the owners have to pay for it to be collected.

I can imagine it wouldn't be great to encounter a wheelie bin of other people's nappies that had been sat out in a heatwave for a week/fortnight, but I would have expected the rental price to reflect having to pay somebody to collect the refuse if there wasn't a weekly collection.

Completely unreasonable.
Our local tip has to be booked a couple of weeks ahead. So far it's been too much bloody faff to deal with last winter's DIY waste because it was too relentlessly soggy to face doing it before lock-down. At one point it was bookings 4 weeks ahead. It's still piled up in the garage.
