To not get covid test for one-off high temp?

Just that really. Would you get a covid test and self isolate for a young child with a one-off high temp with no other symptoms?

Obviously they aren't all following the guidance which is frustrating!

@drspouse

I was told when I looked up taking DS to the testing centre that they were not allowed to swab children, and that we'd have to do it ourselves.

They are definitely swabbing children here if the parents ask you to.

I took DD in at the weekend with a slight fever because I was pretty confident it wasn't Covid and I didn't want to quarantine for two weeks. Had to swab her myself in the car which was as fun as it sounds.

@FillipeFillope

No. The information I received said that the parent does it for under 5s, but when we arrived at the test centre the lady there did it

Why am I not surprised that test centres aren’t all following the guidance given to the public (though if a child allows professionals to do it I don’t understand the reason for the rules)

Children aged 11 or under cannot do the test themselves. You (their parent or guardian) will have to swab test your child, whether you get a home test kit or go to a test site. You will get instructions on how to do it.

@drspouse

I'm surprised that's allowed.

Why?
My elder son was great and opened his mouth wide for her.
Have taken my younger son this morning and he turned his head away and wouldn’t look at her, so she said I could do it myself.

I had to do a test on my DS who is 8, and the option of going to a centre meant I'd still be doing the test on him myself because he a) is a child and b) would have been in the back of the car.

What with not being able to get out of the car to get in the back to test him, and it being more difficult to restrain him to do the test, if he was in the car, I didn't bother with a drive through test. But the instructions were clear that I'd be doing the swab either at home or in the car.

We had this recently. Called my GP who advised us Isolate and to monitor over 48 hours. If the temperature went and no further symptoms arose then to continue as normal. If any additional symptoms arose or his temperature remained high then we would be referred to the local hospital for a test.

When you say "they" don't do nose swabs, surely you did the swab yourself?

Why would she have done it herself. There are still plenty of test centres opened with trainee professionals to do the test. This is much more reliable and quicker than doing it yourself. Much better if you can access those places.

Yep currently isolating.

Just questioning really as young children very often get random temps and then are absolutely fine, wasn’t sure if it needed to be a temp that is sustained rather than one-off and then normal. Wasn’t sure if other people would check temp again later and go from there, or book a test on one result.

In wales or at least in my health board they don’t do nose swabs at all, just throat swabs. And in my area results are taking days to come back. Postcode lottery Sad

@drspouse

The instructions for small children are to do two nasal swabs. No throat swab. There should be no area by area difference.

Yes this. The instructions are clear if a throat swab can't be carried out then both nasal cavities should be swabbed.

I had a home test from ordering test to getting results was 48 hours (or there abouts) and that was a Sunday collection .

I am assuming as you haven't had test results for child 1 back you are isolating anyway? (You should be).

Get a test, results came through in about 15 hours at the weekend. We are now not leaving the house due to being in Leicester!

Because of work guilt I guess

But even if you don’t get the test you should be self isolating anyway. The test should mean you get back to work quicker. The 6 day turn around is quicker than the 14 day isolation you should be doing.

Yes either get the test or prepare to self isolate for 14 days. I had a test yesterday for sore throat and a cough. I booked it at 2.30, had the test at 3pm and got the result back at 7am this morning.

I wouldn't ignore it, but to be honest I would say that if you have to do the self-test on a young child you're hardly likely to get a good sample. I found it very tricky to do even with a 10 year old. I think they don't suggest testing under 5s, but that would assume you would self-isolate without testing.

Just a throat swab in your area?
I had test at 945am yesterday. Result came through at 1.05 this morning 😳

Surely it's less inconvenient for 'work guilt' to get it as it's a cpl of days as opposed to 14 days???

Report
Looneytune253 · 30/06/2020 07:45

You don't have to get the test if you think it's too invasive but you must then self isolate for the 14 days. If you get the test and it's negative you can go back to normal so it's up to you about how inconvenient it is
