As per the title.

Is it a false widow?

It’s in the bathroom. I’m not overly keen on spiders but I’ll try and put it outside rather than kill it.

Or maybe I’ll go have a cheese and pickle sandwich and hope it’s not there when I go back.

It looks the same as the picture of false widows that I googled.

Some spiders don't bother me at all, and I will happily let them have a web in the window. I'm not great with house spiders, though, and I prefer to relocate them outdoors.

@safariboot

Looks enough like a false widow to me that I'd be wary.

Well, it's not as if anybody's suggesting that she gives it a kiss, is it?

Glass + piece of card = zero contact, so it won't be hurt from the removal, it finds a new home somewhere else outside the bathroom and house, flies and mosquitos get eaten, OP isn't having to share the bog roll with it, everybody's happy.

I don't know whether to keep trying to evict it, or just ignore it, but it puts me on edge knowing it's there - waiting

Sorry but this is the sort of nonsense I really can't stand. The spider is not "waiting " for you. The spider is probably far more scared of you (and with good reason given some of the ridiculous posts on this thread) than you are of it.

Do some of you think it's cute to be all scaredy cat over spiders? Because it truly isn't.

As for getting over a phobia- there is plenty of help available. Given we live in a world where we are surrounded by billions of spiders the adult, sane, rational response would be to deal with it rather than spend one's life in fear of a harmless spider.

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt

Some of you really need to grow up.

I really wish getting over a phobia was just as easy as 'growing up!'

Well I have a spider that has moved in under my bathroom sink cabinet, he (she) sits there just outside but if I get near it, it shoots under the cabinet and disappears until the next time I go in the bathroom.

I don't know whether to keep trying to evict it, or just ignore it, but it puts me on edge knowing it's there - waiting. 🕷

Amazing aren't they
once you start to watch its easy to gain HUGE respect

yes, worker wasps are a PITA at the end of the season when they are kicked out of the nest
BUT
they can be easily distracted from your supper with a dolllop of butter or fat

spiders - have you ever played peek a boo with a zebra jumping spider
if not
TRY IT

insect predators protect us from vectors of disease
do no kill them

Hm. I’d probably want to move it outside.

I had one almost palm sized the other day jump out of the duvet at me. I say jump but it had gotten itself in there while washing was on the line or in the garage and remained there until I changed bedding. I shook the duvet and out it flew. Scared the shit out of me. Because I wasn’t expecting to see a spider flying out!

Had to get dh to catch it for me. We put it back outside.

No idea what she is but she's a pretty little girl.
I love spiders. I've got one the size of a dinner plate (slight exaggeration) living in my bathroom.

I read that at any one time there's an average of 30 spiders in every UK house and bloody good job too cos they feast on the little bugs you'd otherwise be overrun by!

The dictionary definition of a phobia
is an irrational fear
therefore dealing with it in a rational manner is the best approach

wasps, spiders, snakes, flying etc
can all be brought under control

DidoLamenting · 21/06/2020 18:45

Seriously.... What about phobias?
Sorry we're not perfect like you

Then do something about it. Get help. You live in a world with billions upon billions of spders, none of whom in the UK are harmful. "Phobia" is not an excuse.

I utterly promise that once you and your kids and their friends have watched a colony of wasps arriving and slicing up a piece of fat
they will never find wasps scary again

yes, they make me jump sometimes
but never scary

same with big house spiders
the boys have pedipalps - boxing gloves
the girls do not
once you've caught them in a glass and checked for that
releasing them gently is part of the deal

COVID came from people shitting on the environment

End of summer wasps ....

Put a piece of steak / ham / pork / duck fat where you can watch it ....
the wasps come and slice pieces off
then bring their friends to slice more off
once you start to sit and watch its amazing and fascinating

and there is NO WAY they will sting you
as they are far too busy

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt

Oh come on, there are no dangerous spiders in this country. And they really do control the fly/midge/mosquito population. (My DDs are absolutely terrified of spiders, though.)

However, come late summer/autumn, it will be me with legs turning to jelly at the mere sight of a wasp at an outdoor picnic. We all have our phobias. Grin

Yes you're right, the people shitting themselves over a tiny, harmless spider really do need to grow up.

House spiders die outside that's why they are inside your house.
