Shoes in the house

Lighthearted - My wife has a really annoying rule about no shoes in the house. I do get it, but she is crazy about it 😂 slippers to be worn on carpet but not on the bathroom Matt. When people come on with shoes (think tradesmen etc) she has to mop with bleach - this isn’t corona related at all it’s just something she has ales done. She also has a rule of no clothes to be worn in bed - I don’t mind that one to be fair lol, but just wondered what other people do in their houses ?

Here we go, a man starting a thread encouraging women to talk about sleeping naked under the guise of a hotly debated topic such as shoes in the house.

In my opinion, it's far ruder to assume one can casually tread the aforementioned filth into my carpet/rug where I, myself, like to sit and spread out and sometimes do my hobbies.

Each to his own. I’d never dream of causing discomfort to my guests. Wink

As for all the hand wringing about hygiene, there is absolutely no evidence that shoes off households are any healthier. Probably the opposite. I read somewhere that floors are very poor carriers for germs.

Ah! Rules of the chateau. I have a no shoes in the house “rule” but l make an exception for trades people etc. I have an old pair of shoes at front and back doors that l just pop on for going to the bin etc. I think this is due to upbringing.

I sleep naked, have done since an early teenager. but that is for my own comfort.

Its nice to read other people are as fastidious regarding shoe hygiene as i am. You would be in the minority in Japan lol..Its a disgusting germ-fest and blows my mind especially if people live in carpeted homes.

If you live in London, as I do, the streets are not, as the story goes, paved with gold but with urine, faeces and vomit.

I don't care if anyone thinks it's rude that I will not allow anyone to wear shoes in my home unless they wear shoe covers. In my opinion, it's far ruder to assume one can casually tread the aforementioned filth into my carpet/rug where I, myself, like to sit and spread out and sometimes do my hobbies.

I also don't allow outdoor clothes on the bed or seats. On London transport, I've witnessed far too many people with their disgusting, germy feet up, or covering the seats with bags that have been on the revolting chewing-gum speckled pavement.

This device has been around for about 100 years now. It's called a vacuum cleaner.

We do the same as your wife OP. Much more hygienic that way. Have always done so, not just in Covid times.

Thinking about it though, we all pad about in bare feet in the house, or socks. So it's easy to put feet into crocs, but if you're wearing slippers it is a bit of a faff to change shoes.

@CountFosco it's easy for the kids to take their shoes on and off, we all have crocs by the back door so we can just slip them in and off :-) I hadn't ever heard that's it rude to take them off before going into a house though, rather the opposite! Funny how things vary from place to place.

bringincrazyback It's because I'm anal and DH keeps his dirty slobbery dogs downstairs and upstairs is the only place I get a bit of respite from their yucky presence

Ah, makes sense now! Grin

No shoes on carpets anywhere don't mind on hard floors. Shoes stand on all sorts there is no way I want them on my carpet !

Up to the individual what they do in their own home, but personally I think it's really rude when people ask guests to take their shoes off. I don't feel at all comfortable sitting around someone's house in stockinged feet and I'd never ask a visitor to take theirs off.

I don't really get the 'shoes are dirty' thing tbh. Unless someone's actually trodden in mud or something worse, they're not that dirty.

No shoes. And there are upstairs slippers and downstairs slippers. No walking into the bedroom wearing downstairs slippers, yeuch.

I can't quite tell if you're joking re upstairs and downstairs slippers @terrelontane - but if you're serious - why??! I don't get it. Presumably you clean your floors, so it's not like the downstairs slippers are going to have more dirt on the soles? Maybe I've missed something here.

I would think only the mourgeoisie would be upset about footwear being on feet. Usually we’re shoes on, unless we’ve kicked them off but at the moment we’re predominantly no shoes, inside or out, as it’s too warm.
Do you not worry about hot tea dripping on your chest if you are always naked in bed?

I just can’t relax with shoes on, can’t ever imagine lounging around with boots on, bare feet or slippers if it’s cold Blush

Shoes are dirty. I would prefer people not wear them in my house but I wouldn't go crazy if they chose to keep them on. when I visit someone else's house I always offer to remove my shoes, its polite.

Errr, that’s why some of us don’t have pets. Not sure if you considered that possibility before asking the ‘smart’ question

Do dogs have to take their shoes off too?

I cannot imagine why anyone would wear shoes around the house, hard flooring or carpet. Why would you walk around outside, stepping into and around all sorts and then walk into your house and not remove the shoes. Wearing shoes on carpets is doubly disgusting. Shoes come off as you enter the front door and placed on a mat or put in the cloakroom.
No clothes in bed is a bit extreme. However wearing clothes that you have been out in, to bed it unhygienic. For instance if you use public transport, sit in a public space like a waiting room, have you any idea how dirty those seats are. Sorry to say but some people’s personal hygiene is criminal. To then come home and sit on your bed or lie in bed with the same clothes would be plain gross.

No shoes in the house, really strict about that (the kids have it so drilled into them that when they were little they used to take them off when they walked into shops Grin Shock ) apart from the occasion friend of DCs that I've had to remind to take their shoes off I don't know anyone (including workmen) who don't automatically take them off when they come into the house.

No clothes in bed? At all? Like naked? I would freeze. Usually have my PJs and a jumper and an extra duvet (whilst DH lies naked under one layer of duvet which he has pushed down to some where near his waist.)

Shoes in the house. I can understand why people don't want to wear outside shoes inside. But change into inside shoes at least. be comfy.

Personally I can't be arsed with changing my shoes every time I nip to the car or the freezer or the garage or the washing line.

No way is this a class thing... the majority of middle class people I know have wooden floors and are not that bothered one way or another. One hint of a cream fitted carpet though and you know the shoes are coming off. No clothes in bed is a weird one though and doesn’t seem to fit with the freaky shoe obsession.
