AIBU?

To think my doctor is wrong and also shit?

I'm aware I do not have a medical degree, and she does, but I can't help but wonder.

2/3 months ago went in saying I have extreme period pain, and I'm sweating constantly at night. Cold sweats and I'm drenched so I have to get up about 4/5 times in a night to either wipe myself down or change etc.
She asked how my bowels were, I said fine, she then proceeded to diagnose me with IBS and give me peppermint capsules ??? I insisted on blood tests and they all came back fine.

So as of today, I'm still sweating buckets at night and it's at the point I'm delirious with lack of sleep. I phoned and explained everything, told her (new, different doctor) my periods are still extremely painful etc. She asked about my weight (so I gave her it, and my height) and she said my BMI is close to 30 so I'm obese, and that's what is causing the sweating. I said I've been this weight for years and I'm more muscle than fat etc and she said "I would recommend you lose 15kg and this should fix your problems. If not, come back"

That's it. End of story.

What the fuck?? I can't even register with a new Dr for a second opinion and there's only the 2 above doctors at my practice 😭

I think it is awful they are dismissing investigating due your BMI.
Is there a well woman clinic available.

You absolutely need to see another doctor. Night sweats combined with other symptoms can be a sign of really serious illness (and could also be something that’s easily sorted). I would insist. My husband had night sweats and was fobbed off by a doctor and it turned out he was very ill. Don’t ignore what your body is telling you.

If you're 5foot 9 and BMI 30 you must 14.5stone? No way do you look that weight?

With a BMI of 30 you are clinically obese. This comes with its drawbacks, and yes, it is possible that the symptoms will disappear if you lose weight. If not, then the doctor will look for any other explanation.

This could be hormonal, but adipose tissue is not a neutral substance; excess fat actually produces oestrogen.

YANBU OP. I don't know what can be wrong with you but keep pushing and definitely change GP if you can.

I actually got better understanding from a male GP than a female one re my problem periods recently.

She doesn't have a lot of excess fat going by her photo..

Hi,

Take vitamin d supplements with vitamin k.

Request a smear Test or buy one privately, or purchase an hpv test Online. This would rule a big one out first. Next it would be an “abdominal ultrasound” to rule out cysts fibroids, possibly endometriosis.

Full blood panels on sites like medichecks can also be helpful.

I don’t imagine the GP will be helpful due to covid-19 - so you need to make Specific requests or see what private options you can do.

It should be done by a process of elimination.

When did the period pain start and does it coincide with the sweating? Assume it’s not normal for you to have painful periods? Do you work out intensively everyday? I’ve noticed the nights following very intense exercise I have terrible night sweats. It happens less now I’m fairly fit but if intensive workouts are fairly new to you it could be worth considering.

I highly recommend someone called Dr Jacobs, based in Dorset and London.
He diagnosed and treated symptoms I had that regular doctors couldn’t.
Such a shame many Drs are so narrow minded

YANBU !!!!

Weight bias in the bloody medical industry

Sounds hormonal to me

It's so common for drs to dismiss things as being due to weight and then they miss the real problem.

Hope u get it sorted out. Maybe change practices

My opinion means stuff all, I know. But you look fab in that pic OP. I've been on a diet my whole life Grin so on that basis am something of an expert and in believe that BMI means shit as a measurement if you are athletic or especially muscly which you must be.

Bless you. I hope you get an answer soon. Hope you don't have to push too hard to get that answer.

You need a referral. Having a BMI of 30 is not a cause of night sweats. You need to know what’s actually going on. Be insistent. Don’t let your GP fob you off.

Where are you sweating from in the night?
As I get sweaty backs of my thighs- but only when I have PMS. so for me it's definitely hormonal. Which makes me think it could be for you too. And you are TTC.
Do you have bad PMS? Do you know if your oestrogen and progesterone are cycling ok?

Are the night sweats just when you are having your period or all the time and I feel you for the pain, also I found ibuprofen was better for period pain than paracetamol just check with your doctor if it's something you can take, as I've been using it for years until my GP told me I shouldn't be taking it due to medication

I am disgusted on your behalf that they focused on your weight: this blog has some good comebacks to help you (when the time is right) danceswithfat.org/2020/03/31/getting-the-healthcare-that-thin-people-get-and-more/

Thyroid problem! I had major night sweats after having a baby and had a then undiagnosed thyroid problem. I honestly lost more sleep to sweating than yo the newborn!!

You need to insist on a second opinion from a different practice.

GPs are not infallible. Far from it. Leukaemia can be barely detected in its early days, but needs to be treated ASAP. Cold, clammy night sweats are a key symptom.

Why can you only take paracetamol for 3 days? If you need it, I’d still take it.What were the blood tests?

I got sent to the hospital by a very worried out of hours dr. I had severe back pain. Whilst in a and e. I suddenly could t breathe. Young dr kept telling me it was a panic attack. I was hysterical. Because I couldn’t breathe. As I was on my way out. I collapsed. The consultant of the a and e was actually looking for me and found me in a hallway. When I came round he said. I think you’ve got blood clots on your lungs. He was right. I had massive bilateral clots. Had I of gone home. I would of been dead by the morning.

Dr can and do get it wrong.

Dreadful that you've been dismissed like this. You don't look overweight at all. Anyway, as other have said, having a high BMI doesn't cause these problems.

What does, I don't know, but I had a period of time in my 20s (I have always been normal verging on underweight BMI) where I also had night sweats very frequently. Not every night but many nights a month. I never got it sorted. I also had amenorrhea for some of this time. (Also not sorted, though forced myself to gain wait by eating loads of shit because Dr was worried it was due to low BMI.) Made no difference. In the end my periods returned and it stopped. I suppose some sort of hormonal imbalance. In my 30s after I had children (no problems conceiving) I was told after a scan for pelvic pain that I had mild PCOS. The pain was from an ovarian cyst. Can only assume that this was the problem though I had none of the classic signs, no acne, hirsutism, relatively big lower body compared to waist etc. I would suggest doing a blood test like Medichecks from home now and going privately if you can afford it at the start of your cycle for a pelvic scan once that's possible again. But also go back to the GP or change GPS.

My GP is permanently available now for phone consultations. Before was impossible to get an appt! Could you arrange one of those with one of the doctors at the practice and tell them everything you've put here?

Night sweats could be sign of something serious. You need to go back and insist on more tests / referral.

Hi, sorry your GP has been rubbish, can you look up endometriosis, see if any other symptoms overlap. I saw someone mentioned this earlier.

I'd also say hormones seem to be playing a part here, but the painful periods are not to be dismissed.
