I really hope there is going to be change in these areas. I live near some of them and I can see some of the issues. But I don't live in them.

What would you like to see done in your area? What advice would you give to the Conservatives when they come and ask for what needs to be done locally?

Transport links?
Encouraging businesses locally
Better local housing?
Improved schools

What would you like to see change in your local area?

Yes exactly @PosiePie

And it is not just "The North" that is suffering from huge cuts and underinvestment and decline. It's anywhere outside major cities. As I said above I'm in the South West, but my area faces exactly the same problems. 25 miles in any direction from here and you're in a decent sized city but can we get there and back on public transport to access the opportunities available there? Can we fuck. We can't even get to the nearest Jobcentre and back in a reasonable amount of time (ie less than a day).

Parliament needs to relocate north.

I've long been a fan of the idea of parliament moving, either permanently or touring major cities. Not going to happen though.

And yet the EP relocation between Strasbourg and Brussels is slagged off because it costs millions of pounds every time Hmm

Parliament should stay put
but decision making and power should be devolved again

It was centralised under Thatcher
it was centralised MORE under Gordon Brown
it was centralised EVEN MORE by Pickles under Cameron

Parliament needs to relocate north

Instead of spending however many millions of refurbishing the ailing house of commons, they could have built a modern secure facility somewhere in the Midlands, with accommodation, catering, teleconferencing facilities, parking but also close to public transport, offices and everything else needed by parliament and leave the HoP as a tourist attraction.

Barbara
That is actually a very sane idea
which means it will never happen !!!

Something else Blair cocked up - by putting the hapless John Prescott in charge of regional devolution. The clown came up with something that would cost people more money but give them minimal local powers - no wonder the public didn't vote for it and it was all quietly abandoned. You'd think they didn't really want the regions to have their own powers - perhaps that's why Blair gave the job to someone useless like Prescott!

Usesr149
Brown was known as "the tinkerer at the Treasury"
he was a total centralising control freak

Pickles started well but then austerity wrecked any real changes
along with capping

It's a good idea, but it would still be refurbing anyway as it would become a tourist attraction.

I would hope, but very much doubt then when the refurb happens they do set up temp outside london.

Once the MP's have had to spend another half an hour for the 5th delayed train it may wake them up a bit.

Lets see if the investment they are promising happens, I think they will actually make certain to 'repay' the ex labour heartlands but it will require a lot more borrowing than what they hoped
