AIBU?

To be less than impressed with this bank experience?

At the weekend popped into local bank with my bf to open a joint account. I know that on MN joint accounts are the work of the devil etc but it's an account for expenses etc for us to avoid us constantly splitting bills when we go out etc, allow us to save for holidays etc (we'll put £100 each into it a month, and still have our own accounts).

Anyway so there's no one to see us right then, but they can see us in 90 mins. We go off and do some shopping and return just over 90 mins later. Wait another 30 mins to be seen. So 2 hours...

We then spend about 10 mins maybe opening the account. All pretty quick and straightforward. Great.

Except they forget to return my ID at the end (and I was rushing as we needed to get home so forgot it myself).

Anyway, got a phonecall about half an hour later telling me they had it and to come in and collect. I couldn't go back there and then, so I went back in today. Asked to take a seat and they'd bring it to me.

Waited another half an hour. Eventually ran out of time and patience and asked what was going on... apparently it got locked away by the manager who wasn't in today and they didn't know where it was. When I went up they were literally emptying a desk pedestal full of biros and envelopes apparently looking for it Hmm

They're going to call me when if they find it. No call as yet.

AIBU to think this is pretty poor service? Bf is with this bank already and generally has praise for them but even he admits it wasnt a great experience.

I don't think being told to come back in 90 min is an issue as my other half popped in to open one for our baby today and got told he had to go back next week, waiting 30 min beyond an appointment time that you managed to secure short notice isn't too bad either IMO as they could well have squeezed you in to help you out, the ID being left is just an unfortunate thing both partly to blame and they did call you to let you know, however not having your ID safely stored where they could access it I wouldn't be happy with

They forgot to give it back to you? Why didn’t you ask right away rather than rushing of?

I dont think you can open joint accounts online, we did look at several banks and all said you needed to call in for a joint account.

It's not Barclays btw.

Ivykaty while we were with the advisor he took our ID off to copy, I thought 'must remember to take that off him when he returns' however I was then distracted by the time (as the 2+ hours made us late for other arrangements) and when he gave us all the account bumpf I forgot to ask for it. I realised about half an hour later just before they phoned but as I couldn't go back then went in today.

So you forgot your ID

They forgot to return. I forgot to ask for it.

Maybe if the whole process hadnt wasted so much of my time I might have e remembered.

And in any event it's surely for the member of staff to ensure they have returned all personal belongings, why am I expected to do his job for him?!

Walk in appointments are really a thing in banking anymore. You would of been better using the online service to book an appointment. It's not their fault that you forgot your id you hadn't left yourself enough time to do everything

They didnt waste 2+ hours of your time, they managed to fit you in at short notice.

Was it Lloyd's?

They took my credit card out the back to sort something out. We were doing some big complicated changes so i only remembered at the end of the appointment.

Lady swore she gave it to me but it was no where in the meeting room. She went to check out the back and couldn't find it but said she would search.

About a week later no word. Constantly chasing. Increasingly worried about where the hell my credit card was. In the end she had to cancel and re issue it.

I sent a complaint and got compensated for their being so rubbish.

If you are not happy with the service then send a complaint

It wasn’t TSB by any chance was it? I’ve had so many problems with them.

I changed my account back from a joint account with XH to a personal account, and a couple of years later they sent him out a debit card and PIN number by mistake.

I raised a complaint with them because their online banking app doesn’t work with the most widely used screen reader on the planet, thus locking out blind people. Cue much apologising and a promise to sort it out. 3 months later and it’s still not been sorted.

There’s loads more which I can’t be arsed to go into, including their online banking going down regularly and for ages. They’re shite, stay away from TSB.

I'm guessing this is ShatWest, who are about as useful and functional as a marshmallow dildo.

Walk in appointments are really a thing in banking anymore.

True, but by the same token, banks should stop plastering 'Simply pop into your local branch' across all their literature making it sound like it really is that simple.

It was Metro bank (who do make a big thing of how you can just pop in etc).

You really need to book an appointment for these things.

It used to be so easy to open a bank account! You just wandered in and they fell over themselves. Last time I did it they made it very clear they didn't really want the account and there were no staff to deal with it now, it was all appointments.

Make a formal complaint and rack in that compo🤑

Report
Oldfail · 26/11/2019 00:52

The compo wont be huge but the fact they have currently lost your ID, not only have you got the inconvenience of potentially needing to replace it and possible cost but also you are at risk of it falling into wrong hands and it being used for fraud.

TSB have gone downhill since they left Lloyd's banking group.

YABabitU

You just walked in wanting to open an account without an appointment and at the weekend - which is often their busiest time - and they managed to fit you in. It wasnt exactly the 90 minutes you were informed but if the advisor is busy with another client then they arent just going to kick them out, especially if they pre booked their appointment so YABU to be annoyed that you couldn't just walk straight in to an appointment.

You then put the blame for forgetting your ID on the member of staff- it is not his job to ensure you have your ID, it is yours. Yes he could have been more careful to ensure he returned your property but when someone has taken my ID to copy the first thing I do when they return to the room is ask for it and ensure it is back in my bag before I even start the remainder of the conversation. If I use my passport I leave the empty cover open on the desk as a reminder, and if it's my licence then I leave my purse open so I can see the empty window where my licence normally lives.

When you returned there may be many reasons they couldn't put their hands on your card immediately (especially if you didnt tell them you would be in that day) but YANBU to be annoyed that they weren't upfront and apologetic.

Rooting through pen pots/desks etc sounds more like they were looking for the key to the managers safe place or a note from the manager to say where it was. Where I work any lost property of value goes to the cash office safe which is not accessible to 90% of staff ... if those 10% arent in then items go in various secure but accessible places and the keys are kept by various coworkers wherever is most convenient and a note is left in our department handover book.

You can open joint accounts online. I have one with Santander.

You can open joint accounts on line. Have HSBC, first direct and starling.

First direct and starling don’t have any branches.

And as I said we don’t have any banks in our local town nearest branch for HSBC is 23 miles.

Bloody love first direct. Though we did once go for a switch to Nat West when they had the £150 incentive on.
They pissed about so much that the offer expired and they refused to honour it. We cancelled the switch and stayed with FD. Best decision ever though I do sometimes get a bit annoyed when I see their joining bonuses and wonder why the customers who’ve been with them since the early 90s never get anything back.
