Sunday morning, on the way to catch the train to work. Stop off at the local shop to find the deli absolutely jammed, so I take my place in the que, hoping I’d get served before I would have to dash for the train.
Just as I was 3rd from the top, this CF came in and asked the guys in front of me if she could go ahead because she had a baby in the car. They let her, i was annoyed because I was also in a hurry and if I missed my train I would be an hour and a half late for work. But I shut up and said nothing. She got her potato wedges and went to the till to pay for them. I was another few mins at the deli, and when I joined the que for the till, it was also long. As I was second from the till, the same CF steps in front with a bottle of water (so obviously paid for wedges) and says to the man in front of me “excuse me could I just step in front I have a baby in the car?” And I said no I’m sorry, I have a train to catch, we’re all in a hurry.

She looked appalled and very taken aback, clearly not used to hearing that. The man in front let her step in front of him and she turned around and told me I was very rude. I said no, I’m not. You skipping two ques is rude. You did the same at the deli. Join the back of the que like everyone else. I have a train to catch, we all have places to be. She turned around and kept telling me I was disgraceful, and rude. The cashier kept saying “it’s done now it’s over now stop it now” and the man who let her first then let me first and told me I had a point.

Is expelling a child a reason to inconvenience everyone else?

"You left your baby in a car?! For potato wedges?! Shame on you! Go and rescue that child before bystanders call the police and start smashing your car windows!"

Who leaves a baby in a car? Even dogs in cars lead to broken window rescues. I don't believe in the car-baby.

I would have challenged her to pull a single baby-related item from her handbag...

I’d be annoyed at this too.

A few weeks ago I was queuing in the supermarket with three things and had been waiting a while. A woman came up with two things and said please can I go ahead of you? I said no, I’ve been waiting ages. The guy behind me said he thought I should of let her go. The lady on the till then said she does it all the time and just can’t be bothered to queue, and said well done to me for not letting her jump.

Well done for saying something.

So the shop manager called me back and he said the more he looked at the cctv, the more frustrated he felt so can only imagine how annoyed I was. She walked past 9 people at the deli, 4 people at the tills the first time and 5 people at the tills the second time. He said the staff member didn’t realize what was wrong until “late into” the conversation and by then it was too late. He said I was right to confront her and could totally see what I meant when I said everyone’s time was precious. He said his staff are constantly striving to be the best they can be and will hopefully be better equipped to deal with incidents like this going forward, and that customer service was important and he hoped that he would see me in the store again, because no customer is more important than another.

Am very satisfied how he dealt with it and hopefully CF won’t get away with it in that shop again

You were right to pull her up,
We were at a theme park last year was rammed, went to burger King.
Was at least in q for 50 mins, 2 young lads walked in when we were at 3 from front, because ei refused to let them barge in, they a cussed me of being racist cause they were black and I was dissusting for being a dirty whitey! Manager had to come out as my oh was getting a bit fed up with them, they were thrown out, but went along clearing everyone's tables as they went 🙄

Id have said no. Cheeky bitch.

Admittedly my radar is constantly on high alert for queue jumpers.

Mousetolioness · 15/09/2019 15:51

A study showed that people in any queue were more likely to let someone jump the queue if they gave a reason why they needed to jump ahead! If they just asked with no reason given they wouldn't be so successful. IIRC the reason given didn't even have to be necessarily urgent (or make sense!).

She probably did have a baby in the car, but neglected to mention that she had her dh or dp in there too.

I let people go in front of me if I can, but only it it's not going to inconvenience others.

Leaving the baby in the car would be completely unacceptable - someone called the police recently around here when someone did it for real, the police did come, and the family has been ranting about the unfairness of the world on social media ever since. Grin

Of course that woman was awfully rude!

Life IS too short for having it wasted by CF like her - well done on putting your foot down.

"It was extremely rude of the woman to ask the man in front for permission to go in front of the entire queue."

I agree & imo he should have said no, that he couldn't speak for everyone.

That doesn't mean that Op wasn't rude to answer a question not directed at her.

"I disagree, I’ve worked retail. She had no business serving someone jumping the que."

Was she supposed to with the customer who had said yes then?

Yeah she is definitely a cheeky fucker. I would be annoyed too.

But please do learn to spell queue! It's in every one of your posts.

Correction, she left baby in car to buy wedges. She skipped the deli que for wedges and most likely till que to pay for wedges. She then came back inside and picked up a bottle of water and waltzed to top of que and asked to skip again.

She is a total CF.

It’s a queue though, sorry Blush.

She left her baby in the car to buy wedges and expected to be let in front. Why didn’t she just go through a drive through if she was so desperate for junk food?

Aridane · 15/09/2019 13:35

I called the shop and complained about the staff, who basically told me to shut up and let it go. “It’s over! It’s done!” If someone gives up their place in the que they should step to the back instead

Life is too short for this!

To be honest, I would really struggle to get this worked up about a non event

Why potato wedges!? I don't understand what relevance this has to having a baby in the car. Fair enough if you were buying formula for your screaming kid or nappies or petrol to get you somewhere. I wouldn't do it but loads do. But potato wedges are low down on the priority list. The joke is she probably went home and told everyone about the CF she met at the shop. Annoying as it is u do need to let it go id imagine ur complaining because its the straw that broke the camels back today

I wouldn't have called the shop. The customers let her push in, not the staff. You were just wasting their time over an issue that was nothing to do with them. She was a cheeky fucker and shouldn't have been served faster than anyone else, but you calling the shop to complain at them makes you sound like you're spoiling for a fight.

She was holding up the entire que by skipping ahead of every single one of us that was in front of her

I think that you were rude in that she wasn't asking you, but the man in front of you.

Perhaps if asked for preference due to a baby in the car, the standard reply should be "best get straight back to it then".

Yanbu

I also hate the assumption that the person at the front of the line has the right to decide for everyone whether they also wish to be skipped.

That's the assumption on the part of the skipper, I appreciate that if you just happen to be at the front of the line you've been put in an award position by a selfish twat

This is rife and sooooo annoying.
Last week I queued for the train for ages ( it was at the platform but we were not allowed to board) .... a couple of mins before departure a CF stood in front of me 😮 I said nothing....
At the taxi rank at my destination no taxi’s .... I queued....a taxi pulls up after a few minutes and a different CF appears out of nowhere but I waved and smiled at the taxi to show ‘this is mine!’ and jumped in ... but what I really wanted to do (but didn’t) was to show CF there was a queue behind me....
Not sure if relevant but both CF’s were male.
