I don't need people to care about me to feel some empathy for them. It's that simple.

@Mintandthyme It certainly doesn't keep me up at night but people's body language does interest me.

It refreshing from the old boring posh names! I hope it Archie on birth certificate

Same could be said for those fawning over the pair of them - why?

This. They are a couple of very unexceptional, not particularly interesting people, who appear more interested in showcasing their privilege on Instagram than doing any particular good.

It's all very Emperor's new clothes, and TBH those that fawn over them make me cringe

Where is there ‘fawning’ happening on this thread? Confused

There are people questioning the view that the names are ‘chavvy’ and stating their right to name their child how they wish.

That’s not fawning.

Gosh, people are nasty to each other on MN.

It seems quite a mainstream name for their generation of parents, he won't stand out at school or if he joins the army. Perhaps that was their intention. My first reaction was not keen, but already I don't care, it's just a name.

Slightly off of them if it's already used by George but who knows, maybe choosing it was meant as a compliment and olive branch?

No matter what you say about Archie as a name, it passes the MN "Everyman" test that people mention when naming their DC. It likely is quite popular across all sectors because it's a normal if slightly old fashioned sounding name that fits at any level. He could do any job as an Archie. He could be a chief mechanic or a surgeon and no one would bat an eyelid.

Given that he's unlikely to be king or especially important to the succession moving forward, they sound like they've just cracked on and given him a normal name. I'm not keen on the names themselves, but that's personal taste. They've done the right thing naming him fairly normally.

Also Beatrice & Eugenie are fairly royal names or at least had precedents for use. Queen Victoria named her youngest Dd Beatrice and I think it crops up as a royal middle name on some of her GDds. Eugenie is another name that pops up as a royal middle name. Another Victoria GDd was Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg (Ena) who went on to be Queen of Spain. She was the daughter of the aforementioned Beatrice!

I’m not black. I'm not a royalist. I just find this obsession over Meghan quite eye opening and appalling

I agree with the above poster - this site becomes more and more like the DM comments section. You can not like a name but chavvy, sink estate, common. Some posters need to take a good hard look at themselves.

As a teacher I have come across many unpleasant students but they are not restricted to the lower classes - plenty of little shits from the leafy MC suburbs as well

DS Hathaway I just remembered this morning that the guy who does our boiler is an Archie. It's a good name imo.

Archie is a dreadful name IMO and totally unsuitable for a royal. I wish the Queen had vetoed it.

I’m sure the Queen would just follow the standard MN advice on non-MN approved names - nod, smile, say “that’s lovely” and keep her own counsel.

I’m loving the reminiscing. I’ve just remembered I dated an Archie circa 1998/9. Mum was a very posh hippy type who ran an art commune on her family money.

His middle name was the surname of an iconic 60s/70s rock star Grin

Hi all

This entire thread is a bit horrible, to be honest. Can we remember (first and foremost) that the couple being discussed are new parents?

We're going to take the thread down now as we think it's beyond saving, and it's causing the OP upset off the boards.

How do you know what is suitable? Are you royal yourself?

Your statement is ridiculous.

This guy's name is pronounced "Erchie".

So now I'm thinking of the baby as "wee Erchie!"

I think it’s a lovely name. As I said on another thread not everyone is as obsessed as mumsnetters for full names & not “nicknames” or “shortenings” Archie has been an absolutely find stand alone name for years. I think Harrison is nice also

I remember a long time ago there was a poster who kept a spreadsheet of why some posters were arseholes. I can see why she did that now, because there's always one topic that brings out the true colours in posters. MM seems to be the one for a lot of people.

Poor Meghan couldn't win here, pick a make like Archie and she's common, pick a more royal name and she's getting above her station! Can we all just agree it's not our choice as its not our baby and be happy for them?
