Cyclists and the Highway Code

Huh. Just Huh.

And Wow, too.

So now we have to be careful not to knock cyclists over, when driving past them.

Of course, they don't have to be careful not to knock anyone over when they go through red traffic lights, do they?

As if they need more legislation in their favour. It absolutely enrages me.

@Jemima232 I can't find the other two threads either, can you link please?

I give you a link to a study that found its drivers that have a problem sticking to the rules

www.forbes.com/sites/carltonreid/2019/05/10/cyclists-break-far-fewer-road-rules-than-motorists-finds-new-video-study/

A few cyclists also struggle but the difference is vast

Jemima232 please link to the two threads about bad cycling. I can only find the one you derailed into being about bad cycling.

What has the fact that a Holocaust survivor was killed on a bicycle got to do with anything?

If you'd read my links, you might get it. I know you didn't read them, or my previous posts, because she was a pedestrian.

Or, just read the other posts, and the penny might drop for you that motorists kill more pedestrians than cyclists do.

I think it's a dramatic counterpoint that she managed to evade death from the Nazi killing machine, but had her life ended by something as both banal and tragic as a bad lorry driver, who had killed before. Obv it also points up the capacity to kill yet be allowed to continue operating the machine that killed someone.

Jemima - I'm starting to wonder.

@Jemima232 it shows that cyclists are from all walks of life. Your narrow mindedness seems to make it sound like you think it's only a "certain" type of person who cycles. Cyclists like everyone sport or activity are made up of a cross section of people.

As I mentioned earlier on this thread, one lorry driver killed a woman cycling, walked free and then killed an elderly woman crossing the road a couple of years later. She was a Holocaust survivor.

Cyclists can kill pedestrians and cause accidents

What is it, less than one a year or something?
Whereas cars kill FIVE people a day.

So yeah sure let's focus on the former...

TfL are idiots.

We already know that it is 98% of cyclists jumping red lights from this thread, remember? Grin

meh. you can prove anything with facts.

I know right?! These irritating people with their ridiculous well-designed observational studies with a decent n number and appropriate statistics. Bastards.

It is fair to say though that any driver who can't cope with cyclists on the road is a truly shit driver and should hand in their license

Fair comment, and it is actually a lot easier to deal with bicycles on the road when you're in a car, than to deal with cars when you're on a bike (not to mention a lot less dangerous). The duty of care should absolutely, obviously be on people driving cars to protect cyclists and pedestrians from their car.

Similarly a cyclist who is dangerous around pedestrians should be treated no differently to someone driving anything else. Cyclists can kill pedestrians and cause accidents.

if everyone started to ride bikes we'd still need to pay for the roads" argument: I've definitely read that on tarmac roads light things like bikes do practically no damage to the surface, so in this bike utopia road maintenance costs would plummet, plus people wouldn't feel the need to argue congestion means we should build more roads

You maybe interested to know that in Denmark they have found that for every 1 Euro they spend on cycling infrastructure that they save 5 euros in medical care, absence from work etc

Cars cost far more to use than drivers pay in fuel tax and are subsided by other tax payers ipayroadtax.com/no-such-thing-as-road-tax/when-will-drivers-start-paying-the-full-costs-of-motoring/ of course with fuel prices frozen since this report the gap has widened

Frankly I think the government should heavily invest in off road dedicated (and direct) cycleways with priority for cyclists, this would take the vast majority of cyclists off the roads and pavements AND increase the number of cyclists/decrease car use dramatically.
//www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/2019/apr/26/if-you-build-them-they-will-come-record-year-for-cycle-counters

Totally agree. The cycle superhighway in London is a great thing.
