To take dd 4 to see the new dumbo film??

I was planning to do this on Sunday as part of a day out.
Whilst trying to book the tickets I saw it was a PG not a U.
My work colleague said it's supposed to be quite scary.
Anyone seen it yet?? Would PG (which is only parental guidance) be suitable for a 4yo?

As a kid, I howled for days when Violet died in Watership Down. As an adult, I wept bitterly when Wellard was out to sleep in EastEnders. The new version of Dumbo would probably end me!

Can you give your tickets away to a friend/neighbour (with kids obviously) who might enjoy it?

I would take my 4.5yr old, he has older siblings so has watched Charlie and the chocolate factory etc and he's not usually phased by things.

The only time he's ever got upset watching a film is Matilda, because "her mummy and daddy are not kind to her"
The other parts fine, just one particular scene he doesn't like

Fridasrage - it's not that bad imo, not those we went with. I'd probably say about 3-3+ out of 5. The colours on screen were lovely, and the overall story line was fine, with some nice touches. It doesn't really follow the full line of the animated version though, though it's many years since I've seen that version tbh too - it was never really high on my film lists.

Chocolateisfab blimey isn’t the meg a lot of people getting eaten/mauled by a giant shark??

Op I think it might be a bit too soon too, even if your DC was ok with the darker bits it might be difficult to follow the plot which is aimed at slightly older audiences

It got absolutely slated in The Guardian, 1/5

No way would I take a child to see Dumbo. I’m still traumatised from when I saw the animated version 30 years ago! Bambi and Watership Down were similarly upsetting. And the bit in Pinocchio where the kidnapped children are turned into donkeys and crying for their mothers. Animated films were very dark back then!

Dumbo is traumatic! It's up there with Watership Down for me with kids films I'll avoid at all costs. I think Dumbo is worse from a parental point of view, makes me want to cry thinking about it.

Just back from seeing it.

It's quite short - less than 2 hours.

It's less emotional than the original in our opinion.

There are some aspects that a young child may find scary - fire, danger, death, some circus animal cruelty, the 'other' park.

Overall I'm not sure a 4 yo would really get it though - it's aimed at a little older and above.

I guess if we don't go I wont be spending at least £20 on all the snacks so in a way I'm actually saving money by not going Grin

My mother reminded me today of us going to see Dumbo 40 years ago, and me crawling onto her lap sobbing. No way would I watch it again.

I took my 4 year old daughter this afternoon. It wasn't nearly as sad as I thought it would be, she wasn't bothered by the dark bits. And a much happier ending than I expected. It didn't blow me away, was enjoyable but I wouldn't be fussed to see it again. Bring on Aladdin!

My 4 yr old saw it tonight. He enjoyed! He's not very sensitive though, and has watched loads of stuff he probably shouldn't have seen though older siblings. It wasn't too upsetting though?? Original was far sadder and more stressful. I wasn't overly impressed with it though!

Just seen it tonight with 5 and 7 yo dds, weren't scared at all. It's not bad but equally wasn't blown away by it although cgi Dumbo is very cute

Just back from the cinema after watching Dumbo! Took DD 18 and DD9!😀. It was good but a bit dark at times so I am not sure it is suitable for younger kids, I’m not sure they would get it! Also felt like quite a long film.

I suggest actually ringing them tomorrow and explaining you made a mistake, most places are pretty good when you get through to a human.

newadventure consider the money you’ve paid already spent. Don’t put yourself through the hell of watching HDD on the big screen.

I wouldn’t take her to Dumbo. It’ll STILL be a harrowing story, unlike Charlie & Alice. Yes TB makes them ‘darker’ but Dumbo is a heart wrenching story unlike the others.

Go play mini golf or something 🤣

I can't believe I'm going to sit through almost 1.5 hours of hey dougie, I have it on Netflix ffs!! At least when I'm at home I can fuck off to another room.
And on mother's days too!!

Dumbo is properly harrowing. I'm trying to get out of seeing it with DP. It kills me now at 29 and I'm usually untouchable.

(Frankieweenie is great Grin)

I wasn't allowed to see Jurassic Park in the cinema on account of it being too scary. My mum's reasoning was that if William and Harry weren't allowed to see it, then neither were we. This may or may not have been quality mum BS - I have no idea as to whether or not the two princes were allowed!

Ds loves all the Jurassic films.
The whole family are a bit obsessed tbh!!

Dc are going with a couple of friends each as their birthday celebration. They will be 7. We've decided it will be fine for ours and parents of invited children have the option to stay if they want to. I have been very clear on what we are seeing and mine have seen the trailers. One is more concerned about clowns in the film!

They've seen both Alice in wonderland films TB directed, Charlie and the chocolate factory, frankenweenie and James and the giant peach so they are familiar with the TB style of film.

Given some of the absolute tripe that is around these days, I'd far sooner a tb film which might provoke thought and discussion about circuses, treatment of animals and of people, feelings of abandonment, finding people who care, than many of the 'super sweet' kids offerings. Even the Lego movie 2 has themes which could be upsetting to children - people
Being kidnapped, emmet being separated from his friends, being conditioned by a relative stranger...
