Sorry but you came off as very judgemental and scornful and couldn't accept people's reasonable explanation. Now it seems you're upset because, save a couple of people, no one really agreed with you, and now you're upset and lashing out.

What I mean by trivial is that you seem awfully worked up about adults simply dressing up for Halloween as though it's affecting your life somehow. This doesn't seem to be out of curiousity or lighthearted, but as though you want people to stop doing it because YOU don't like it.

Forgive me if I'm wrong.

@Gettingbackonmyfeet I did thanks, sweetie.

I can handle people telling me whatever. AIBU isn't a forum to just accept what people say? Am I not allowed to respond now? If it's so trivial why are you continuing 😩

And yes, you didn't SAY you think you're superior, but that's how you seem to be coming across.

Shock
Wow - that's an irrational amount of anger over something so trivial.

Why post on AIBU if you can't handle people telling you that you are?

What's there to understand? Different people enjoy different things. It's not exactly headline news.

Pp said
A lot of people do it the traditional way and are celebrating their dead loved ones

Your sarcastic response was
Celebrating their slutty dead teacher loved ones?

Thats not the original traditional way to celebrate Halloween and honour loved ones who have passed, so there was no need for your reply. If you dont understand something but you mock it it says more about you than the people doing it.

@TheWiseWomansFear thank you. It's the same on my laptop but that explanation makes sense.

As for Halloween, I'm not a fan but then I've never liked dressing up in fancy dress. If other people want to then that's up to them.

I'm also not sure where I've called anyone pathetic or mocked anyone? Or at any point considered myself superior?

As you're all so quick to point out adults can do what the want, they can also have this thing called an opinion?

At no point have I been rude to any of you

How about because life is short and any excuse to find a moment of enjoyment

Because the concept of lighting the winter and facing the fears that the dark brings was actually a sensible response before electric lights

And because at the end of my life I have no doubt the memories of silly and fun halloween antics will make me smile far more than the realisation on my deathbed I wasted time being bitter and sour for no discernible reason other than needing to feel superior over others because ultimately I'm not and need to fake it and sneer at something arbitrary to establish fake dominance?

Hope that helps OP

@Dragonglass you're on an android and OP is on an iPhone. Your phone doesn't support her emojis so what is actually a black woman with hand up put three times you see as the original hand up emoji+colour moderator+gender moderator

It's almost like, I dunno, different people enjoy different things.

I swear people start these threads as though to validate that they're superior.

Because they enjoy it. It brings them pleasure. Sparks up the serotonin and dopamine which is all good for your health. Because they enjoy the opportunity to be creative or collaborate with friends and bond. Because parties are fun for many people. Because it reawakens their inner child and they don't think being a grown up means you can't be playful.

YABU. It’s just a bit of fun. I for one enjoyed spending some time tonight fake blooding my face instead and going out instead of just sat in front of the TV. Fine if you don’t want to but to start a threat to mock others who do want to celebrate Halloween is U IMO.

How miserable some of you sound. As a few posters have said, what business is of yours if (adult) people go out and have a great time on Halloween? Confused

I never understand why some people are so bothered about what others do! Why not mind your own business, get on with your own life, and let people get on with theirs. Not hurting you are they? Hmm

To come on here and start a thread about how pathetic adults are, who celebrate Halloween is way more pathetic than anyone celebrating Halloween.

Yanbu. I don't generally get excited about it, but will admit that I am this year. Dc are 3 and nearly 2 and I have made them outfits. We at having a Halloween tea at my parents with sone relatives and friends, then going round the neighbours houses (who all take part) for trick or treat.

TheBigFatMermaid · 27/10/2018 20:40

I get excited because it is a massive event in our community. Those who want to decorate their houses, inviting Trick or Treaters to come along. Loads of us do! I get around 170 kids to my door and I love that. Kids from all over that I might not see from one year to another, but love to see.

The high lights for me have been my friends DS, age 12, reluctant to leave home, to go to school, but deciding he can do this, rocking up, covering his ginger hair with an orange wig and my friends DD, who has Downs syndrome, coming dressed as a witch, as I was, and us having our pic taken together.

For me, it's a bit of fun with family and friends. Every year, my spouse and I and our kids dress up as some sort of skeletons. I have some very pretty half masks in my growing collection that I like to use with my skeleton costume. It feels fun to take a step out of normal day-to-day to be a masked skeleton lady.

We dress up, decorate the house with skeletons and pumpkins, put out special framed photos and drawings of our passed loved alongside their favourite treats, marigolds, and candles. We go to events or host them here, have some special meals where we discuss our ancestors and thoughts on death, go for an evening walk and sprinkle the marigolds. As a family who has lost 5 close relatives and dealing with a terminal diagnosis in family in the last 3ish years, it's been a way balance the loss and feeling out of control with connecting memories.

You're not being unreasonable to not understand it - I really don't get the appeal of Christmas, especially spending months prepping for it in a way that seems to excite others but just sounds exhausting to me, I don't get adults wanting to spend weeks on a beach and I know others don't get how I can spend hours walking in the woods quite happily on my own or with people. We all find our own joys and ways to connect together.

Why not

My dad hated it when I was young

Now I get to enjoy it. I decorate the house and love giving out sweets
