Son’s wedding

I am one of those dreaded mothers-in-law. My daughter met my son-in-law at school and had one of those weddings that mumsnet hates; it was big with family, friends and thousands of children as my daughter loved children. After a decade and a half of infertility, failed IVFs and countless miscarriages her beautiful little girl was born. She is now 6 and very precious. My son cried with emotion when she was born and seems to love his niece, plays with her and visits often. After a few failed romances he met my future daughter-in-law and life’s really looked up for him. Our son-in-law knowing us from the age of 14 kind of fits in with us whereas in her mid 30s daughter-in-law had of course her own established life so rarely came to visit. My son asked us all out one evening and asked daughter to get a baby sitter one evening but she said she didn’t have one and asked if granddaughter could come but son suggested son-in-law could stay at home. This didn’t go well and neither of them came. Our son announced his engagement. We were happy and daughter did congratulate them and told me had she known she would have come. A few weeks later we were taken to the venue. It was a small room in an historic building. A table that could accommodate around 30. Seeing the smallish number my husband asked if he was inviting extended family as we are both close to our own siblings. We were upset when the answer was negative. We did not say anything but did ask on another occasion if their choice of a small wedding was informed by money and if so we would pay for a bigger venue. He absolutely assured us this is not the case. The invitations have come ... “adult only”. My daughter rang her brother to ask about granddaughter but he said children cannot be accommodated. We are in a state of shock but have said nothing. Daughter has been crying all weekend. Would you just accept this?
