As per the title!
Am hoping to improve skin and hair with supplements, am considering trying to control hormonal breakouts with evening primrose. Has that actually worked for anyone?

More generally just interested to hear what you take and why

Basic multivitamin (very difficult to get the full RDA every day through diet, plus vitamin D is key as I work indoors and wear spf 50 facial sunscreen daily)

Omega 3 capsules (as above, don't religiously eat two portions of oily fish a week, so supplements help as an insurance policy)

Probiotic (Bio acidophilus forte or Optibac, as recommended to me by a consultant gastroenterologist)

When I was doing IVF I was rattling with supplements (most of which I'm sure I just pissed straight out!)
10,000iu vitamin D3, 1000iu vitamin E, high dose omega 3, extra selenium, 5mg prescription folic acid, 6g l-arginine, resveratrol, CoQ10 ubiquinol, melatonin, n-acetyl cysteine, 4g inositol - and probably more I can't remember! Total waste of money I'm sure.

DH took vitamin C, zinc and selenium as recommended by the fertility specialist, and the selenium made his nails grow ridiculously quickly, and cleared up any patches of dry skin! Makes sense as selenium is the active ingredient in anti dandruff shampoo - he had the silkiest elbows while he was taking it (and constantly trimming his nails!)

MrMeSeeks · 21/05/2018 17:03

NotARegularPenguin · 21/05/2018 17:05

High dose Vit C. Am prescribed it as part of a medical trial for a condition I have.

Martinimonster · 21/05/2018 17:08

I have recently bought some evening primrose as I have a hormone imbalance.

I take turmeric to try keep me supple and prevent inflammation as I have a really active job and I also take garlic capsules cause it's good for your heart

peachgreen · 21/05/2018 17:11

Pregnacare New Mum - I took the pre-pregnancy and pregnancy ones and didn't have a single illness for over a year - stopped when the baby got to 2 months and got two colds and a virus in a row. So even if it's a placebo effect, it works!

Very high dose Vitamin D - everyone is deficient and my mum has MS and her consultant recommended that her children take high dose Vit D as there's a correlation between low Vit D and MS - no proof yet but it has definitely given me more energy and zest for life either way.

Neato · 21/05/2018 17:12

Vit D3 (pale and generally avoid the sun)
Cod liver oil (don't each much fish)
Gentle iron (heavy periods)
Hormone regulating tablet (helps skin with hormonal outbreaks)
Magnesium (marathon runner and it helps with muscle repair)

winterinmadeira · 21/05/2018 17:15

Calcium for my bones because I don’t drink much milk or eat much dairy
Vit d3 to aid the above
Magnesium to help repair my muscles

ThePants999 · 21/05/2018 17:17

Multivit, cos my diet is atrocious, and while I'm not so silly as to believe a tablet is an adequate replacement for healthy food, it's surely better than nothing.

vilamoura2003 · 21/05/2018 17:17

I take milk thistle as my liver is fatty and has some growths on it. I also take a general multi vitamin and an omega 3,6&9 tablet.

megletthesecond · 21/05/2018 17:18

Currently nothing fancy just a multivitamin and mineral tablet. I've taken them since I was a kid.

Lottapianos · 21/05/2018 17:19

Vitamin D3
Magnesium for anxiety and vit D absorption
Omega 3 6 9v(flaxseed oil)

I took Sambucol from September through to April and didn't get a single cold. That's not like me

bananafish81 · 21/05/2018 17:27

I also take CBD oil - whole plant hemp oil extract (I take Charlotte's Web Everyday Advanced), couple of drops under the tongue.

Xenia · 21/05/2018 17:30

None. I eat a fairly good diet so don't need them. I sometimes have gellatin which is bone marrow so I suppose that might count.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 21/05/2018 17:32

Calcium and Vit D as I have low bone density (osteopenia)

LostPlatypus · 21/05/2018 17:37

I'm prescribed vit D and iron. I also take a vit B complex because I'm veggie and it's generally advisable to.

Fintress · 21/05/2018 17:44

Biotin
Menopace (basically a multivitamin)
Folic acid (doc's orders)
B12 shot every 8 weeks

I stopped Omega 3 before I had surgery (doc's orders) and need to restart, it's been months.

maxthemartian · 21/05/2018 17:46

Lots at the moment!
Magnesium
Vitamin D
Vitamin K2
Zinc
Vitamin C
Vitamin D
Riboflavin
B12
Omega 3
Marine Collagen
NAC
Selenium
Curcumin (Turmeric extract)
Probiotics

Also CBD oil.

lhastingsmua · 21/05/2018 18:14

Also in regards to Skin, Hair & Nails tablets I don’t think they’re much better than a normal multivitamin tablet. The concentrations will be very similar so you might be better off going for a general multivitamin as Skin Hair & Nail types tend to get expensive! I have tried a few from Holland & Barrett and Boots and just take multivitamins now

jamoncrumpets · 21/05/2018 18:27

Pregnacare. My consultant wants me on it. I hate it.

GoldenBuns · 21/05/2018 19:45

A multi-vitamin with cod liver oil (I take the Seven Seas one) - as a precaution.
Magnesium - for anxiety and sleep.

jamoncrumpets · 21/05/2018 19:51

I think I need to get on the magnesium bandwagon. Any recommendations for doses/brands? I have GAD and sleep issues.

Sparrowlegs248 · 21/05/2018 19:53

Iron because I'm anaemic. Vitamin C to help with the iron absorption.

I saw a documentary a while ago which said most supplements taken by people are not necessary.

maxthemartian · 21/05/2018 19:53

jamon magnesium glycinate is good. Mag oxide isn't well absorbed and can cause stomach upsets.
Doctors Best is a good brand. You can get it on Amazon.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 21/05/2018 19:54

A multivitamin to stop my eyelid twitching.
