AIBU?

To wish Danny and Sandy didn't fly off in the car?

At the end of Grease? To me it’s just a horrible cheesy ending to one of my favourite films. And yes, watching it as a grown up i can see its messages are sexist and wrong and Danny is a complete turd, but I loved it as a child and can’t put it aside.

But the car, no...crap even as a child.

I always thought the car was a theme park ride and it then breaks free and drives away. Seeing as the last scene is set in a theme park.

It’s frustrating when people attack films that don’t clearly promote a feminist ideology, as though films should be a form of propaganda.

That Sandy transforms herself for ‘her man’ (and who’s to say it’s not also about her as she seems far more liberated and powerful in herself with her new image), isn’t ‘promoting’ anything, let alone misogyny, it’s simply part of a story! It’s important that we and our children recognise this when they read books and watch films, and be able to make critical judgments on how characters should impact their own beliefs and attitudes.

St Elmo's even!

One of my very favourite films is At Elmo's Fire, for loads of reasons.
But there have been a few threads in here picking it to bits mainly with regard to the male characters all being awful. Which they are. It I still love the film. Grin

Wasted a lot of time looking at fan theories on friends. So interesting!

Ahh I love Ferris Bueller's day off Sparkling. Never actually seen Grease all the way through though.

The alternate ending
time.com/4012752/friends-alternate-ending-phoebe-fan/

Theres also another one where Chandler dies.
Another one that everything is in Rachel's head where she is freaking out about her up coming nuptials to Barry.

If we're discussing Back To The Future can we discuss why when Marty hit puberty his parents didn't recognise him as the guy who got them together.

Because it is unbelievable. At most, they would think, "Wow, doesn't Marty look a lot like that Calvin Klein guy from way back when..."

Trivia: In the original script the time machine was a fridge. True story.

But Danny changed for her too? He stopped hanging out with the lads, tried sports, earned his letter jacket instead of the leathers etc.

DS1 (18) watched it for the first time last week, he was very underwhelmed. Grin

Grease is an awful film. I hate the way Sandy had to change to be accepted. It sends a terrible message to young people

To the pp who mentioned Harvard, as much as I would like to see Sandy put two fingers up to those smoking, singing delinquents she wanted to be friends with (Grin) there is nothing in the film to suggest she is brainy...

Oh don't worry MyGast. The flying off in the car thing was Hmm. But people do like to pick films to bits.

I might start a thread asking if Back to the Future is based on a true story. Grin

Sorry this was meant to be a light hearted thread about the stupid ending to Grease not an in depth dissection of it. Blush

I do agree though, Grease is a sexist, pro-bullying piece of shit, and I probably won't show it to my dd, but also Pretty Woman. OMG. Great soundtrack though.

In the original script, they didn't fly off in the car. There was no flying car.
They all go off together, with arms around each other, singing a verse, and start dancing again.

I love the one about Labyrinth - was obsessed with that film when I was younger.

Oh fucking hell. Another thread over-analysing Grease. We JUST had one a few days ago.

Better not mention what I think of Pretty Woman then.
