Undercharged... WWYD and AIBU

Just got back from large chain shop. 40 min drive away.
I bought a large cream blanket which was folded and tied up with a thick ribbon. It had a large card 'tag' with a price sticker attached to it.
The only way of removing the tag was to untie the ribbons IYSWIM.

There was only one blanket in the shop and when I got home, I thought I'd quite like to order another so, I searched online using the barcode.

The barcode was for a £15 blanket and I paid £15. The on-line product search came up with a cheap looking thing - not the one I have.

I searched through the images and I actually have one that should have cost £85. My blanket has no label sewn on it but it's definitely the expensive one.

AIBU to just keep it and not say a word? I got it for £70 cheaper ffs!
It's not worth £85 in my opinion & there's no way I'd have paid that but even so... WWYD?

poor I wondered that when I got home & attempted to buy the second one on line! It was carefully folded & tied so didn't look out of place (other than it being the last one!).
I often winder when I come across odd/single items of clothing 'hidden' behind racks of clothes that are all the same. I always think that someone is coming back for that...

I think you've accidentally bought someone else's carefully (or not so carefully) executed plan to swap the labels and get an £85 blanket for £15...

I got a set of baby bottles for free once. They were £35 and I had bought other stuff. I didn't realise till I got home and saw they weren't on the receipt so she hadn't scanned them. But it goes round in circles cos I've also lost money before. It happens.

Just think if how much stuff you’ve overpayed for in the past, this balances it out

When I worked in retail (large chain), if something was incorrectly priced. we always honoured it. The company preferred to lose a few quid here and there in the name of good customer service.

Similar thing happened to me at Lewis’ when we were scanning stuff for our wedding list. There was a lovely canteen full of cutlery (normally £250) but had an individual tag on it for £100. We had some vouchers on us so took it to the till at the end and it scanned at £250. I pointed out the sticker and the manager honoured the cheaper price so we paid for it there and then.

Do you think that large chain gives two hoots about you? What is the factory like where that blanket was made? Do you feel a loyalty to this company? Why?

InspMorse I know they were on separate hangers but putting one top under the other one is usually deliberate and keeping the 2 hangers is usually a 'get out clause' should the sales assistant notice. Trust me, I've seen it all

As for your blanket, it wasn't your mistake and wasn't deliberate so enjoy It!

You are perfectly entitled to keep the item and not feel guilty about it. I looked it up online and found this. They didn't realise it was the wrong price so they have no legal right to claw back the money. As they don't know I wouldn't worry about it
This is what it said
If an item is priced incorrectly on the shelf, or scans at the wrong price at the till, retailers are under no obligation to honour it, under the Sale of Goods Act. They can offer the item at the correct price or refuse your money and withdraw the product from sale.
If a pricing mistake is not noticed and the customer pays for an item at the reduced cost, the purchase is considered a legally binding contract between the retailer and the customer. The shop has no legal right to claw back any money if it later realises there has been an error.

The floaty top & vest were in separate hangers. With two tags I imagine. Hardly stealing in that case but I do get your frustration.
I was in M&S and was being shown a range of furniture by the assistant. She pulled open a drawer and found a man's suit hanger & labels.
She said they're always finding stuff like that discarded in weird places.

DH works in a supermarket.
Somebody put a £5 sticker on a child’s coat.
They then moved all those coats onto the sale rack.

DH was on the till she went to.. he scanned it and obviously it came up as the real price. It was a busy day anyway, but he got the team leader over to check the price.
Both DH and TL knew it wasn’t right. But they let her have it for £5.

TL went to speak to store manager when it was quiet. They went to watch CCTV and the store manager wasn’t bothered.

The store manager even confronted the lady when she was next in! She denied doing it even though they saw the cctv. But the store didn’t bother doing anything.


I would be chuffed with myself for accidentally getting a £85 blanket for £15! Snuggle away!!

People do this in my shop but we're not stupid enough to fall for it. It's called stealing.

The £15 label/tag comes from a fleece one. Mine is not fleece

Yep, no judgement here. You'd never have known different if you hadn't googled. They sold it at that price and you believed you were paying the correct price.

I once bought a load of things in Matalan where I hadn't kept track of the prices going around. Didn't realise until after I got out they hadn't scanned the most expensive jumper! Kept it too and didn't go back in to tell them.

Definitely keep the blanket. Although I guess my morals are questionable...

I bought something recently; took item to till, price on till cheaper than ticket! They sold it to me as the price on the till so I won! Hurray! Not sure what happened but I put it down to serendipity, think you should too.

Enjoy. I once bought a cashmere bed throw from TKMaxx for £50. I googled the company afterwards -their price was near enough £500! It's still on my bed and it's lovely just right for cold nights when you want to read in bed and keep your shoulders cosy.
