I never thought it would end like this.

I have been in foster care for 12 years, 5 years with one family and 7 years with another. This makes me incredibly lucky compared with the many other foster children I know who have had lots of different placements. I am 18 now and I am waiting for my A level results to see if I can go off to university. It had always been understood that I would be able to stay with my current family until I had finished my degree (at 21) but now I can’t! Three months ago my foster mother, who I love to bits, was told she had cancer. Somehow it was agreed, in meetings I didn’t know about, that my placement would have to be ended to reduce her workload. The first I knew about it was when my foster dad told me the bad news. I feel so sad. Sad for my foster family of course, especially my foster mum, but sad for me as well. I don’t feel ready to live on my own yet. I’m moving out of my foster home on Friday into a small council flat – not in a tower block luckily – and I’m feeling quite scared and almost abandoned. I cannot share how I’m feeling with anybody I know because I know I will come across as horribly selfish. Could I have a bit of hand holding please.
