...so that we wouldn't be allowed to discuss Fruit Shoots again, ever?

OP posts:
MrsSpoon · 19/03/2007 15:54

Ah yes they have exceptional taste.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 19/03/2007 15:54

what is the 'bad' ingredient that started it anyway? has it got aspartame (sp?) in it?

twelveyeargap · 19/03/2007 16:00

Aspartame and Asulphamene K are the sweeteners. There are also preservatives in them and guar gum and stuff like that.

No artificial colours or flavours is the claim I think...

Anyway, unless you feed your kids solely on home made things then you'll find all this stuff in tons of foods in your house. I mean, you probably wouldn't even use gravy granules if you looked at what's in them.

I'm a firm believer in not resorting to convenience food if it an be helped, but the occasional fish finger and fruit shoot never killed anyone.

GRUMPYGIRL · 19/03/2007 16:01

Twelve year LOL...Or mention mother & baby parking (which turns into a scrap about m&b v disabled), working mothers v SAHM - sometimes its so tempting when excessively bored! Just stand back from the computer, do not light the touchpaper...go to the biscuit tin instead.

MrsPhilipGlenister · 19/03/2007 16:03

twelveyeargap, I am quite sure that many many mumsnetters don't use gravy granules - awful lot of salt, for one thing

twelveyeargap · 19/03/2007 16:03

Ah yes. Sometimes I wish I could make a bowl of popcorn and just spectate at these rows.

twelveyeargap · 19/03/2007 16:04

There was a fairly juicy one about pregnant women drinking alcohol there earlier. That's always a contentious one.

twelveyeargap · 19/03/2007 16:06

I've seen loads of people say not to use gravy granules when making baby food, it's true.

Don't beleive that my DH and 11 year old DD can't handle a bit of salt though. I certainly can't handle hanging about making gravy from scratch. We'd eat at midnight if I did that.

ludaloo · 19/03/2007 16:08

oh no please don't let gravy granules be on the MN "No No" list! I have no idea how to make gravy unless I use granules!

staceym11 · 19/03/2007 16:13

luda, i was just thinking the same thing!!

wouldnt use it for ds, but dd gets a dribble and i have some too, dh doesnt liek it tho!

GRUMPYGIRL · 19/03/2007 16:14

Try cutting out salt in your food for a few weeks then go buy food from the supermarket, you would be surprised how much of it is inedible when you get more sensitive to the taste of salt.

Im sure granules will not hurt your 11 year old though as long as you are not feeding her with it intraveously!

staceym11 · 19/03/2007 16:16

i dont cook with sat but im sure its in a lot of the value stuff i buy (tight budget)!

ludaloo · 19/03/2007 16:20

mmmm me too stacey I don't add it to anything...pastea etc...but I have no idea how to cook and I don't have much time or money to experiment. I keep as healthy as I can...do nice homemade lasagnas, pizzas, cottage pies and the likes, but still find a fair bit of convenience food crops up...

ludaloo · 19/03/2007 16:21

....the gravy in my cottage pie for example is usually granules! Must find out how to make my own....

GRUMPYGIRL · 19/03/2007 16:26

I think the value fish fingers had less salt in that the better range...although im probably spawn of the devil for feeing my children fish fingers!

staceym11 · 19/03/2007 16:28

dd hates fish fingers as shes convinced its chicken and has gone wrong !!!

MrsSpoon · 19/03/2007 16:31

Gravy Granules are the work of the Devil.

staceym11 · 19/03/2007 16:33

on a par with that drink that cant be named or not?!?!

tinkerbellhadpiles · 19/03/2007 16:55

Gravy granules go well with Smash

helenhismadwife · 19/03/2007 19:08

you can make gravy without granules

my girls dont drink fruit shoots they have wine insted only very very occasionally and very very watered down

onlyjoking9329 · 19/03/2007 19:14

i will not let my kids eat fish fingers after my DS pointed out that fish in fact do not have fingers

wheresthehamster · 19/03/2007 19:24

The main ingredient of some makes of gravy granules is hydrogenated fat. I don't know how manufacturers get away with it.

I suppose they know that masses of people never read the ingredients list. Yuk.

Othersideofthechannel · 19/03/2007 19:25

So glad this thread exists. I asked a while back what a fruit shoot is another thread but no one answered. Now I gather it's a fruit drink made of lots of artificial chemicals, a bit like Sunny Delight? Is that right?
(I'm in France, hence my ignorance)

wheresthehamster · 19/03/2007 19:27

Yes, but at least it doesn't pretend to be good for you like Sunny Delight.

staceym11 · 19/03/2007 19:39

yeah drink full of rubbish but im in the school of 'in moderation' os am fed up of the arguement about them!
