AIBU?

Should I really drive my husband from Knightsbridge to St. Pancras at 6pm?

So today we had to visit (distant - husband's) relatives for lunch in Croydon. We live in Fulham, so it was not an easy drive.

We picked up/dropped my MIL off in Knightsbridge and my husband had to go onto the Eurostar tonight. My kids were home alone at this point and I'd been driving for 2 hours so I said: take a taxi to KX.

Should I have driven him? I'd have gotten home at 8.30!!!! He's pissed off and didn't take my call earlier.

Glad all back to normal this morning - probably just grumpiness at being unceremoniously booted out earlier than expected and having to fend for self rather than being spoiled with a lift.

You would have had to not just drive him there but also drive yourself BACK.

It would have been madness to do that.

Tube or bus. You live in London, driving in London is just unnecessary. No one like the tube at rush hour.

It was a horrible day for travel all around - tensions were high. We spoke this morning and all was forgotten - I considered showing him the thread but then he'd know all about the Museum of Curry.

thanks all

The tube would ordinarily be quicker but yesterday at the time you are talking about Kings Cross Station, Warren Street and Euston were all closed. I was on the train at the time and watched people fail to listen and attempt to get off at two of those stations.

If he does bring it up I would ask him why he thinks that its ok to massively inconvenience you rather than have a small inconvenience (swapping from one car to another) himself. Ask him to justify a) expecting you to take that massive inconvenience and b) the strop when you didnt.

Wild guess but he has a high powered high paying job and you dont...yes?

EweAreHere · 23/02/2017 22:25

I wouldn't have driven him since he had much simpler, more straightfoward options that wouldn't have massively inconvenienced you (and your children!) after you already spent a fair amount of the day driving him about so he could see his family!

Tell him to man up. He needs to apologize for being a big baby.

Live and let live of course but I'm with everyone else on the total madness of refusing to get on tubes at rush hour and getting a cab instead. Traffic is so much worse, at least the tubes move.

Incidentally, my DH has a similar aversion to the tube at rush hour. He loathes it. His solution? To live in central London during the week while DS and I live in Zone 4......
Shock

Really? A flat in Zone 1 because Zone 4 is too far?

YANBU! Sounds awful.
Also if he gets to choose no tube travel in rush hour he certainly can't complain about your choice.

I live in London, and wouldn't have even considered using anything other than public transport for the entire trip (including the bit to Croydon) unless at least one member of the party was quadriplegic.

Driving into central London is an inherently selfish act, given that you are adding to

  • the well documented air pollution problems that kill 9500 Londoners prematurely each year
  • the congestion

Exceptions only apply if you are either (a) severely disabled and unable to use public transport, or (b) are transporting something so large and heavy that public transport would be a physical impossibility (e.g. a pallet of bricks - a suitcase doesn't count).

Your husband is being thoroughly unreasonable on many counts. I can't say I enjoy having my personal space invaded on a rush hour tube, but that's the price you pay to live in London if you wish to travel at peak time without being selfish.

Taxi home everyday? I assume he must have a very high paying job, but if his mother lives in Knightsbridge I guess Grin

I would have taken him seeing as we were in the car and in central London anyway. I live here so am aware of rush hour travel. I don't think you did wrong though.

A taxi home everyday? It sounds like madness in terms of cost.

YADNBU

The tube is amazing! Sure, sometimes it's delayed, overcrowded, smells funny, and the Northern Line is where dreams go to die, but you can just tap your little Oyster card and go anywhere in minutes.
