Cat had her spay done yesterday

Dh came home with some medicine for her from the vet when he bought her home

He said its a painkiller but I've got a sneaking feeling it's an antibiotic.

Can't go look at it at the moment because I've got a sleeping cat on me

Anyway the instructions say give her 0.5ml once a day.

Which I've been doing.

Dh asked me today how much I have her and said 0.5. He went "What!! It should only be 0.3! The vet said 0.3! No wonder she's all sleepy and chilled out"

He didn't tell me 0.3 so I assumed the instructions on the box are right

So AIBU to follow the instructions and to keep following the instructions?

She's doing good thank you

She pulled her stitches out this week though the stupid animal so had to go back for an antiobiotic shot but it's mostly healed and the vets were happy to leave it

I've been given her 0.5ml with food

No diarrhoea or sickness but lots of sleeping.

Still happy enough to eat and chase around when she wants to though

I agree with littlefrenchonion ( I'm a vet ). Unfortunately, cats can be quite sensitive to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Drowsiness can be one of the signs of overdosage and there is a risk of kidney failure. If you contact your vet, they should be able to contact the poisons helpline for specific information on the dosage you have given, and whether your cat will need iv fluids. Sorry, I'm sure that isn't the message you wanted to hear, but better safe than sorry.

Oh and yes, must be given with food.

It's one ml (or syringe unit if that makes sense) per kg body weight. My girl cat was prescribed it last week and had 4measures on the syringe, she's 4kg.

Vet nurse perspective here - I would call your vets and let them know. I don't think it will be a problem, but you should let them make the call.

Don't make the mistake of thinking it's just an anti-inflammatory - a cat's kidneys are unfortunately quite sensitive to issues of toxicity, and an anti-inflammatory at the wrong dose has the potential to do some harm. Problems usually appear later on, so I would call them to be on the safe side.

I would stop using the medication for now, until you've spoken to them.

I would also stop using it if she's had any vomiting or diarrhoea as it can irritate the the gut lining, particularly if given without food or given more than stated (usually once daily).

I've seen meloxicam do some pretty horrible things at the wrong dose! It pains me to see someone describe it as just an anything...

Yep that's an anti-inflammatory, my dog has it for her hips (and she's like a bloody puppy again jumping around the place!).

She'll be sleepy anyway due to the op.

Just keep an eye on her, but she'll be fine. It's just an anti-inflammatory.

It's an anti inflammatory like ibruprofen, she'll be fine having extra for a couple of doses. She'd be sleepy anyways, general anaesthetic knocks them out a bit for days

Not sure about the dose question, but I'm pretty sure that's a pain killer. My cats have had it in the past

Now dh has said 0.3 it does appear I've OD'd the cat.... the 0.5 is the suspension not the dosage.

The bloody dosage is 2.66kg. Which is clear as mud with the syringe they gave me.

Why didn't dh tell me it was 0.3!!! She should be ok shouldn't she?

She's only had two doses 24 hours apart

YANBU If that is whats printed on the dispensing label. Maybe call the vets in the morning just to double check.

It does say by weight yes

But then it's printed instructions. As in the vet printed them off with her details and stuck it on the box. And they weighed her yesterday for the anaesthetic so should in theory have an accurate weight for the correct dosage
