to expect my cats to use the flippin, soddin, bloomin catflap!

We got it installed last year before we went away so our neighbours could look after them without waiting for them to come in and out while we were on holiday. 8 months later and we are still holding the damn thing open for them both!

The older cat even uses it like a door knocker, pushing it open to make a noise to let us know he wants to come in so it's not like he can't work it!

Any tips for getting cats o use one by themselves?

My parents have 3 cats - all siblings - 2 of them won't let the other one use the cat flap - except to go out when they send him to sit in the rain with his nose pressed to the window asking for food. One of life's victims!

We started a fight between our cats tonight was standing banging a can of tuna with a fork in plan veiw of the flap. Boycat could see me and was yowling, Girlcat came and swiped him out of the way for a view then started yowling herself. Boycat, not impressed at his treatment by his housemante then jumped on her and all hell broke loose . I think we'll just hold it open for them in future!

well this morning I discovered he has nibbled quite a bit of tesco ready made sweet pancake things I tell you nothing is safe in this house!

We don't have a cat flap, but his litter tray used to have a door on it but he was far too dim to use it. He looked petrified at the thought of having to push something open. I took it off in the end. He won't even try and open a door (he's a british shorthair, I don't think they are clever cats!)

Exbury, my cat used to do that! Stretch up and use the knocker, I mean. She was far too aristocratic to use the flap if any of her servants were around (Siamese).

My current cat used to sit and watch the world through her clear flap but never used the darn thing. So we just didn't bother putting one in this house - she has to wait for us to open the door. Then walks round the house and sits at the top of the step outside the back door, waiting to be let in. She really isn't an outdoor cat.

My cat only drinks evian, he sneers at tap water. And it can't be cold. At a push he will drink cooled boiled water but he doesn't look overly impressed by it.

Our cat will sit and flap her paw feebly at her cat flap like she has forgotten how to use it - I find a toe up the backside helps her memory

When actually shut out at night (she can get into the utility room but not the rest of the house) she has discovered how to reach the door knocker on the front door - really freaked me out when I was on my own and "someone" knocked on the door at 2am!

Mine have Iams "on tap" in a gravity feeder but go absolutely bonkers for the new Olli trays.
It gets all three in the kitchen for bed without fail.

I could send you packs of unused jelly food Milkshake lol... oh and beef too - they hate it. I stand in the supermarket for ages trying to work out what to buy. They are much more fussy than my kids... or perhaps I am just more soft on them than my kids.

Mine refuse to have 'designer' cat food - turn their noses up at Whiskas, Felix etc.

Will only eat Asda or Tesco own in gravy (jelly seems to be the stuff of nightmares). I'm not complaining - saves me a fortune.

aha! Very good, must rember that when mine have wetfood - they're normally biscuit eaters.

Although DD tipped too much in the bowls, ie the whole box, so we had Mt. Pilchard Crunch! The carefully swept up al that fell on the floor and binned them! Like th cats care. They prefer to drink dirty puddle water than nce clean tap water FGS!

Anyway upshot is cats are starving andhad to have a tin tonight

No you won't regret this - is a very good tip (courtesy of my frequently drunk, but occasionally lucid sister).

Cover the cat bowls with cling film - no more scrubbing out vile, hard, old cat food. Just whip off the cling film in a nanosecond and hey presto - a nice clean bowl to cover with yet more cling film. It works, honestly... and no, the cat's don't eat the cling film (at least mine don't...)

this morning he had the nerve to attempt to clear up my bowl of musli BEFORE I had even finsihed. His scavenging drives me insane especially due to his ill health he is not to have anything but cat food. Last night he started licking the dark chocolate off my digestive whilst it was in my hand!

He is worse than the children, at least they would beg first!

Yes!

FIL hates MIL cats - and thought I was as cat mad as her - I do love my cats - but not to have them do that! So he gloats when I tell them to shoo!

Euuuww... I love my cats (have their picture on my phone and not my daughters - a bit worrying that - need to join catsnet) but would freak if I found them drinking out of my cup or glass...

When MIL stayed with us while I was having DS she let malecat drink from her teacup - now you cant put a mug down without his head appearng from somehwere to try and nick it!
