I mean come on.

Even me, the queen of slack and low standards thinks that's just too gross.

Her argument is that she cleans the bin lid everyday. (She doesn't)

AIBU to want buy her colour coordinated cloths for the kitchen 😂

Why disgusting> Surely better than wiping with the dishcloth?

It was a joke Smile

I always spray my bin lid (because the three males in this house tip the plate straight in without opening it first, so stuff splashes all over it!) with dettox and then wipe it over with kitchen roll ... if I used a cloth it would have to go straight into washing machine ... I have to change cloths and tea towels after each use and the washing up scourers need to be changed every 2 or 3 days or sometimes I pop in microwave for 40 seconds .... I got more worried about germs when kids were little

I agree with Wellthatsit antibac products are causing all sorts of shit, I use old fashioned hand soap and generally clean with soapy (washing up liquid) water. Antibac hand soap literally strips my hands and causes bad skin conditions too. And now they sale antibac washing powder for clothes too. It's crazy!

I put nappies in the kitchen bin but it's emptied every day as it's quite a small bin and it lives in a cupboard on its own with nothing else to contaminate. It doesn't even have a lid so no lid wiping issues. CBA to walk out to the front of the house with millions of nappies every day with 3 under 4s thank you all the same.

Wiping the bin lid with a cold damp cloth then wiping your worktops is gross though. Using the same cloth which has been wrung out in super hot water just before yoyu're going to bung it in the wash, fine.

I have about 12 microfiber cloths; I use one for the worktops daily that get chucked in the wash at the end of the day or after doing a particularly dirty job (see above mentioned 3 under 4s - I caught DS2 pooing on the floor yesterday after his bath, the tinker. He is only 16mo though). Simple. No festering cloths; no need for complicated colour coded systems.

My PIL are obsessed with hand washing and yet leave raw and cooked food uncovered in their fridge and use the same manky bit of j-cloth for weeks on end, including wiping the baby's highchair Envy

Our obsession with antibacterial soap and over cleaning is actually causing all sorts of problems.

I thought everyone knew that by now. Germs are good for developing our immune systems and over cleaning has contributed to much more serious problems.

This thread is amazing. Just so you all know when I change my kitchen bin bag I chuck all the other 'mini' bins rubbish in there too. So we are talking bathrooms, bedrooms and front room bin. I too cannot be bothered to go to the outdoor bin for just a silly handful of rubbish. Or shock horror I just tip it into the main kitchen bin!

Food waste doesn't go in our big bin. We've got one of those council food bins. Our bin is full of plastic wrappers and none recyclable packaging. Nappies go in a mini bag and outside. Our bin is much less offensive than the counters.

Yanbu! My MIL does this in our house when she "helps with cleaning"! I've given up trying to explain how disgusting this is to her and now just bin the cloth and rewash all the surfaces with Detol. I don't wait till she leaves the room or try to hide my disgust!

I'm sure that would probably get me added to the DIL moaning thread GrinGrin

Mowgel, whaaaat? When did MrsMatt invite you for coffee? Think I missed that...

My mil blew her nose ( with a horrible cold) on a tissue then wiped the bin lid with it as there was a mark. Apparently it was OK as she had folded it over. WTF...

Flingmoo · 02/01/2017 18:59

Yeah if it's only the lid it's probably got fewer germs on it than the counter top!

Also, if she wiped it down then, she probably does it every time she cleans the counters, which actually means it'll be kept really clean anyway. I do this and use antibac spray.

I can't think why the lid of a bin would be more gross than a kitchen counter TBH!

Yeah Ragwort all of the things you mention are composted...

Most stuff other than food waste is recyclable.

Mrsmatt, I never ever ever want to come to yours for a cup of coffee, you sound rude and filth to me.

To be fair, Ragwort picking up your point to a PP, lots of the stuff you mentioned like peelings, teabags, non-noseblown kitchen roll goes in our countertop composting bin, so not so bonkers Smile

A former cleaner used to empty out her Hoover contents into our largish kitchen bin.

Yup, great thanks, that's 2 weeks' worth of other people's shite you've just donated to us. Cheaaaaaaarrs!

(Quick, where's the Zoflora Fresh Linen flavour)

I refuse to have a kitchen bin. All rubbish goes straight outside back door into my wheelie bins. So every time you have a tea bag, carrot peel or a tissue to get rid of you have to open the door and go out to the wheelie bin Confused.

Mumsnet is bonkers.

My cleaner cleans my bun lid and puts it on the draining board, on top of anything drying to dry. Drives me nuts!
