Ore is a good dancer, however I think Danny is and was just brilliant tonight with Oti. Smile

Yes, it isn't a spoiler - but is there an easier and shorter way to refer to it than my verbose phrase?

Report
ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 19/12/2016 18:43

sorry, not a spoiler?

Report
ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 19/12/2016 18:43

So we agree it's to a spoiler?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/12/2016 18:38

It spoiled some people's enjoyment of the final, because they saw the result here before being able to watch it - is that better? I accept that it wasn't a spoiler per se, but it is a quicker way to refer to what happened than my unpithy 20- word phrase.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 19/12/2016 18:32

It's not the same.
And again, it's not a spoiler.

The thread title could have been edited in such a way that it did make sense - "AIBU to think the wrong person won Strictly" would have done the job. Frankly the original title didn't make much more sense.

I am thrilled Ore won! I do agree that Danny was superb and that Oti (my goodness I am so envious of her looks - SO beautiful) is a hugely talented choreographer. However, just on that night, I really feel that Ore edged it. Danny made mistakes on his lovely quick step whereas Ore's jive was perfect and, just personally, I adored Ore's show dance whereas I didnt like Danny's at all (too flingy and angry). Also, the Singing in the Rain number was my favourite from the whole series....so I am pleased. And I like that he cries. SO sweet!!

But they are making a fuss.

Removing so called "spoilers", and I don't agree they are spoilers, a spoiler is what Digital Spy had, 24 hours before the broadcast, makes the whole thread title nonsensical.

It's all too much Heath and Safety and Regulation.
Watch it or don't, but don't dictate to other people what and how they should talk about about a programme.

I do get the excitement - I said so, much earlier on the thread - what I don't get is the nastiness - the 'you are so precious, you should watch it at the time, why are you making such a fuss!' that has gone on.

If I got over excited and accidentally spoiled the outcome of a programme, I would apologise, and ask MNHQ to edit the title - simple as that.

But the default reaction seems to have been to turn on anyone who objected, even in the mildest of terms, to a spoiler. That seems nasty and unnecessary to me.

Fair enough Lizzzar Smile It was just that on the main threads we often get "he went to such-and-such a theatre school, where they all have hours of compulsory dance" and I just wanted to point out that Canford isn't actually a dance/performance specialist college or school, it's just a normal secondary school.

Because people watch their favourite programme, they get excited, they come on MN and post when they are happy or unhappy with the results.

It's the spur of a moment thing, and it's part of the enjoyment of watching in company, be it 'only' MN.

If someone watch to avoid spoilers after a popular programme has been broadcast they are best advised to avoid social media.

No-one is saying their life has been ruined, Vintage - I don't see any 'batshit' reactions. Xmas Hmm All people have said is that it spoiled the ending of the series for them, and why couldn't people be a bit more thoughtful.

I do a job that takes me away a lot, I miss things and have to watch later. I quickly learned that if I don't want to know things I had to stay off social media and forums!

I haven't watched any previous series of Strictly or many of the episodes of this one, but from the ones I've seen, and most of all from the final I thought the winner was worthy. Danny didn't look quite as good in the final dances (apart from the samba, in which he was superb) and seemed nervous and a bit awkward, whereas Ore looked pretty flawless. Louise was a clear third place to me and not in the running!

Maybe Canford's more sporty than arty compared to Bryanston, for example, but they nevertheless do musicals and theatre, and that's really all I meant. But congratulations to Ore anyway.

I repeat, people for whom finding a "spoiler" is so damned distressing should maybe step away from the telly a bit because these reactions are, frankly, batshit.

So you can't think of any circumstances where someone might have a few minutes to come on MN before they have time to watch the programme on catch up, Maddie? Really?

At work, MNing in their break, Strictly recorded and waiting at home, for example. Grabbing a few minutes to MN in a busy evening at home/on an evening out, with recorded Strictly to watch later.

I don't expect people to avoid spoilers for days, but is it really SO bloody hard for people not to give out spoilers for a day or two? Just avoid them in thread titles. It is a little bit of consideration - why do people have such a huge problem with that?

Wants to avoid spoilers...comes on Mumsnet and/or the internet.
Unbelievable.

If it was so important they'd be watching on Catch Up and not coming on Mumsnet, surely to Christ?

I have relatives at Canford and it's definitely more rugby and rowing than dancing!

I found Ore more likeable than Danny (other than the ceaseless crying!) and I think he had music and theming that was probably more recognisable and popular a lot of the time.

Report
Lizzzar · 19/12/2016 03:16

Ore hasn't had professional training, but he would have had some opportunity to dance at Canford school and to say he completely learned to dance on the show is an exaggeration. Also, he has previously danced as an amateur for the BBC. I thought Oti's choreography was the most interesting, and Danny was being criticized heavily for small mistakes. I'm sure he did get some dance training at drama school, but he has never hid that, and most actors get some dance training, but are still allowed on the show. But it is a public vote, and went the way it went. The best dancer doesn't necessarily win, and Ore fairly won if the majority of the public voted for him.

I'm pleased ore won. Danny was technically good but I didn't enjoy watching him (except that samba). I always enjoyed watching Ore and was really pleased he nailed the final.

Report
morningtoncrescent62 · 18/12/2016 21:18

Think Danny should have won. He was much the best, and Ore's constant blubbing was embarrassing.

I watched on catch-up this morning, and I'm very glad I didn't see this thread title before I'd seen the show - I would have hated to have known the result in advance and it would have spoilt it for me. I purposely don't watch live TV, or go to online sites where I know the result might be discussed, including the Strictly thread over in Telly Addicts, when I'm trying to avoid spoilers. But IMO it was thoughtless to name the winner in an AIBU thread title, and I'm glad MNHQ edited it (even if the edit doesn't make much sense!).

My dd (8yo) mentioned to her friend ON FRIDAY that Claudia was out. Friend and Mum were upset as she had not yet watched Semi Final. Hmm

Why do we need a spoiler warning for sonething that's already been broadcast? hmm

Because a lot of people don't get to watch everything live, and it's just a simple, basic, common courtesy to not spoiler things like that. Competitions for a few days, at least, and anything that's a twist, finale, or cliffhanger for months, and movies in theaters until they've been on home video for a while--at least.

There's never really any call to put major spoilers in a topic line, even on an old film/show, as there's always new generations of people who haven't seen it. They should get a chance to have the same viewing experience as we did (meaning doing into it not knowing the ending/big twist!). (The exception being the stuff that's just pop culture now--Soylent Green is people, Vader is Luke's father, etc.)

Jacques - no-one is saying don't talk about it - all they are saying is please avoid spoilers in the title of a thread. Discuss it to your heart's content in the thread.

OK - so spoilers don't matter to many of you. Is it so hard to understand that some people don't like them, and to avoid obvious ones (i.e. in thread titles)? Why is that so hard?

Report
KurriKurri · 18/12/2016 14:53

Maybe an idea to post about TV programmes in Telly addicts, then people who would like not to see spoilers (and it is only the next day - so not totally unreasonable for people not to have viewed yet) can avoid that section of the site.

People do tend to look at AIBU all the time and it is hard to avoid accidentally seeing something if it is in an unexpected place.

There is dedicated Strictly thread in Telly Addicts.
