AIBU?

To get so cross about sexist children's adverts

Just watching kids TVs with DS2 and the adverts are so infuriating. There was an advert for a sparkle science (pink of course) for girls followed by a circuit set for boys (blue of course). It's just so limiting to pigeonhole our children into narrow gender ideas when gender is a social construct in the first place.

Rant over, just needed to get that out my system

Do you actually know any parent who would refuse to buy their daughter Lego or a radio-controlled car if that's what she really wanted for Christmas, just because the advertising person said they were "for boys"?

The thing is, it might not occur to the child that she was 'allowed' the 'boys' toy. And we've certainly heard of boys who are refused 'girls' toys. If the manufacturers, advertisers and shops didn't present things this way maybe some of those parents would be less blinkered

Yanbu this gives me the rage! My 3yr old niece told me the other day she could not read the dinosaur book "Its a boy book and I'm a girl I only read girl books" before going a getting sleeping beauty. I gave her a good pep talk on why dinosaurs were good. That there was no such thing as boy and girl books and that if a man you have never met before kisses you when you are unconscious that is not ok do not marry him
We should not be telling girls or boys what to play with but by colour labelling it all we do. It gives girls less choice, last year I had to buy wellies for DS aged 2. Asda had 8 types of wellies all different colours and styles star was etc but not in his size so I went to the girls sections. There were 8 types of wellies there too but ALL were pink! In different spades, with frozen on etc but a far more limited choice.

I quite like the Smyths toy advert at the moment, where in the extended version, they have a boy dressed in a princess dress at one point, and playing with a whole range of toys.
