I have joined a slimming club. Stuck to it . I do loads of exercise anyway. Been doing it 4weeks..have lost 2lbs and tonight put 0.5lbs on!!
Leader said I am not losing because I am not eating enough!
Drives me insane this theory!
If I eat more I will be eating the same as I ate before joining!
How does anorexia work?
Why do laws of physics say less calories in and more exercise lose weight?

So frustrated! !! Argh!!!

The Dutch study is fascinating, but yeah, talking about dna changes to next generation, not metabolic changes in the subjects themselves.

Sorry got to be said - nutritionist here, Its not a lie you just need too research it. I for example am terrible at eating, i skip breakfast and eat lunch at around 3-4 and its normally like half a sandwich then i eat dinner at 7-9 .... i am classed as obese, but not because i eat too much.

So for those calling Bullshit, do some research and learn about it all. All you have to do is Gooooogle it!

"'Starvation Mode' is defined as a concept where your metabolic rate declines during the process of caloric restriction or weight loss to such a degree that further weight loss becomes impossible or weight gain occurs."

You need to up your metabolism as much as you can too lose weight and eating a lot is good, if that food is healthy, when they say eat more they dont mean go and stuff your face with burgers do they.

smartleatherbag Where to start??? Well I highly doubt you or any of your friends from your "yoof" were eating less then 500 calories a day for years at a time.
As for your definition of plump? What the fuck is plump, size 10/12/14?
And what is "ample" eating? I eat half what my slimmer friends do and work out more but I did fuck up my metabolism with a decade of starving myself.

What I'm saying is that even long term starvation doesn't affect the subjects' metabolic processes, given access to resources. It has, in one fascinating study, shown dna mutations to ensure that the next generation adapted.
This is not the same thing.

Thefitfatty The other side of the coin is that many, many anorexics need extra calories when being re-fed. I don't buy all the permanently damaged metabolism either. There are huge psychological elements to that.

Alright fit, calm down.
Yes, we were. For many, many years, some of us. As I say, my organs went into failure. Ample, well I eat at least 2000 cals a day.
But these are anecdotes. And so are your examples.
Have you any actual evidence of this process? Do you understand what "metabolism" means?

Smartleatherbag · 17/11/2016 20:34

Ha ha! A 'nutritionist' citing Google as a means of research. Dear me!

No organs don't need to be shutting down.,,just long term calorie deficiency

girl anyone can call themselves a nutritionist these days. It takes a 3 hour course online.

Nutritionist and Dietitians are completely different.

i also don't understand how you can be obese when you are eating 1 meal and half a sandwich? unless that meal is 2000 calories?

Do you even science, love?
Anyway, rather off the subject, sorry op. OP, you're right.

The Dutch hunger winter thing -- that's a very specific mechanism, fetal imprinting. It's a time of life when bodies can be programmed to much more extent than adults ever could be. I thought the big problem with this cohort is heart disease, actually, not so much obesity. The Dutch have the lowest obesity rates in Europe.

Whatever you do, don't google "Holocaust survivor fat" (grim).
if you google "Holocaust survivor year 1950 1960"etc, there aren't pictures of noticeably plump people.

Whilst we're on the subject of nutritional 'truths' - where does the don't eat after 6.00 pm because your metabolism won't work properly come from?

How come the whole of Spain isn't obese?

My last comment was to the nutritionist and fitfatty.
Glad to read some other posters not talking nonsense.

Toptoe, do you seriously believe that if you ate 3000 calories worth of high protein foods each day, you would lose weight, with a typical tdee of 2000 kcal?

WeAreUglyButWeHaveTheMusic · 17/11/2016 20:38

I agree.

I don't know about 'starvation mode' (I know what it is, but I've often wondered the same as you, OP), but yes, I know that if I don't eat breakfast, I don't feel hungry until about 2pm and then eat lunch and dinner without any problems.

But if I eat breakfast at about 7am before I leave for work, then I'm having painful hunger pangs by about 10.

I started a thread on this a while back, it drives me bonkers!

I once saw someone on a thread claiming that if they ate fewer than eighteen hundred calories per day their body went into "starvation mode" Hmm

Another former anorexic here, I put on weight when I eat more and lose it when I eat less.

It seems my body didn't get the memo that stuffing myself with "healthy* food, whatever that means, will make me lose weight.

Or are you being ironic in the spirit of the thread?

I got to a slimming club, well behind my target weight now, it acted as a trigger for my old eating disorder though I didn't consider this might happen when I joined. Anyway everyone says Iook great etc but the fact is I practically don't eat & exist on wine and soup and am addicted to weigh in, I get twitchy if I can't go.

Starvation mode is a myth.

Report
Smartleatherbag · 17/11/2016 20:46

I actually find it quite revealing that someone isn't aware of how few calories and for how long, an anorexic eats. 500 a day was a binge for me. For years, I existed on a couple of apples and a hard boiled egg. About 160. And minimal fluids.
500 cals was a feast!

Intermittent fasting really works for me. But I've never had to lose a lot of weight, so Idk how good it is for slightly bigger people.

Report

It makes sense to me.

I have lost 12 kg by spreading out my meals to the point of eating something pretty much every 90 minutes throughout the morning. Not big meals, just filling in with an apple, or a banana, or a low fat youghurt between breakfast and lunch, and lunch and tea, and between tea and bed. I am supposed to eat 1600 calories a day, and when I do manage to stick to it, I lose 1 kg a week.

If I dont eat like this, and let my body go into starvation mode two things happen. 1. My body thinks it is not getting food so it absorbes absolutely everything and store it. 2. I a absolutely starving by dinner time and over eat profusely.

By calorie counting, and spreading out my meals I dont feel hungry, and I dont overeat, because I dont get this mahoosive feeling of hunger due to bloodsugar yo yoing.

This is what I hate about dieting - it all starts getting so confusing and I end up getting panicky and stressed that I'm doing it wrong! I never eat breakfast, as it makes me feel sick eating early in the morning, and it does stress me that maybe I should be forcing myself to - but if my body doesn't want to, will it really do me so much good Confused
