AIBU?

to ask if I did the right thing?

I have just called the police on my neighbour. I was putting the recycling out and heard shouting and screams from across the road. It wasn't a normal 'loud row' - the screams were of a woman in pain. I heard her shouting 'give me my f-ing phone' and at one point the front door opened and slammed shut again. So I called the police. When they arrived, the man leaned out of the upstairs window and shouted at the wpc - 'there's nothing wrong here, you're not coming in, I know it was that f-ing bitch from across the road' etc. Now I'm feeling very anxious. I did the right thing didn't I?

YANBU OP, you did the right thing.
The fact he wouldn't let the police in speaks volumes

You definitely did the right thing OP, as a pp said better safe than sorry.
And if your neighbour is indeed a victim of DV she might be reassured to know that she has an ally just across the road

Well done OP, without question you did the right thing. I'm so glad that there are people like you in the world.

If you a notebook handy I would suggest starting a diary in there of your interactions with him, beginning with you hearing him saying "I know it was that f-ing bitch from over the road".** Just in case he carries on with it, it will help you if it escalates to a point that you feel the need for support or if you need to report his behaviour towards you.

Are you ok? All sounds quite shocking.

Yes, he let the wpc in after about 10 mins, and then my daughter says another policeman arrived.

Yes you did. Better to call the police and it be a false alarm than to not call and regret it later.

You absolutely did. If there really was nothing wrong he wouldn't have been so against the police quickly checking.

Of course you did. He sounds very abusive and his partner may well feel that little bit safer knowing the police were called.
