Y6 done no work since SATS

What are your y6's doing now?
At dc school they've done no maths or English or any lessons really since the SATS. They needed a break yes, but AIBU in thinking it'd be good to keep up what they've learnt? What about the summer slide?? This is summer slide plus two months!
They are practising for an end of term play relentlessly. Learning songs to perform & watching DVDs. The teachers don't seem any less stressed though, shouting at them and threatening to call off the play if they don't show more enthusiasm ConfusedConfused they're bored rigid!

All the schools round here generally disregard SATS result and reassess kids when they arrive in year 7.

Peach - the only problem with that is that the results would not be available in time for Y7 setting or for us as parents to know how they had done.
My ds is bored rigid, 3 lines in the summer performance practised for weeks on end, art which he hates but no actual education according to him.
Away for a week now but no doubt 2 weeks of boredom to follow, he has told me himself (and his friends have) that they are bored

This is the reason why they have fallen backwards at the start of Y7.

The sats should be moved to the last week of Y6 so they have longer to prepare and less time to muck about.

I'm a year 6 teacher, this week is the first week we have not done maths or English - if I didn't teach them my day would drag!! We've done LOADS of science too. This week we've had a trip, lots of art and PE and practicing for the leavers assembly. We probably won't teach maths and English again this term. (Two weeks left).

Dd did enrichment activities after SATs,lots of trips out, visitors into school, they did a mini enterprise project, they did inter generational learning (over 50's club came into school taught them woodwork skills, gardening, knitting, crochet etc) They learned bhangra dancing and drumming and they did a lot of practical science experiments so not loads of maths and literacy they were just a bi product of the activities. Dd really enjoyed the last few weeks tbh

The good thing about 11 years old is their ability to talk.

How do you all know that your children aren't doing any work? Are you actually in the classrroms with them, being bored shitless?

Report
hotdiggedy · 06/07/2016 21:18

I wonder how many people would be complaining if the children had been set straight to work on endless maths and english lessons straight after SATs and not having any school play/DVDs etc.

Still not getting the worry, sorry. Maybe we were lucky, but DS1 was year 6 last year, and the last few weeks were invaluable.

He spent a week on PGL, then a week doing sport, and then rehearsals for the school play - my nervous DS, who gets tongue tied talking to adults, had a major speaking part, which was worth a months English lessons IMO.

Then a few days with transition stuff (and additional counselling in his case), and parties with a class that were dividing between six secondary schools.

If it is handled right, then the last month should became celebration of their time at Primary School.

And they do get tired. DS has the constitution of an ox, but he was so run down by the end of SATS, he got an eye infection.

I agree with op btw, they are about to step up to a major challenge and having virtually three months off... Mine goes from tiny village primary to BIG cluster secondary, he'll need more than a passing ability to scorn his current Hm in a socially acceptable way...

DD2 left year 6 last Friday and is now in high school as a year 7, it seems one or two of the local catchment schools does this.

Hope that makes sense.

As in they now set the pass mark at the middle score after the results have been collected.

Report
SaucyJack · 06/07/2016 21:01

Ah OK. I can explain that.

It's my understanding from the meeting we had at school that the results are now organised with the pass mark being at the median. It's mathematically impossible for around half of them to pass.

They may have all done fantastically well in relation to last year, but the new system will always make it look as though half of them are failing.

Sorry, 53%, not 47% have met a basic standard.

I've actually written this year off mentally. A complete waste of everyone's time. My child isn't exhausted because she isn't doing anything. She actually begged to not go to school the other day because the play rehearsals are so deathly. (and they are being yelled and moaned at too).

This is why I got really annoyed when the government was floating proposals to extend the school day and shorten holidays. The issue is not how much time they spend in school but how that time is used.

Creampastry · 06/07/2016 20:58

National SATS ... only 47% of kids reach the basic standard in reading, writing and maths this year, compared to 80% last year. Im sure the kids haven't suddenly become thick as shit and this is a curriculum issue, but its too early to stop working and faff around making shit.

SaucyJack · 06/07/2016 20:57

Do you mean the National SATS scores Cream, or your child's/child's schools personal ones?

Report
Oblomov16 · 06/07/2016 20:57

Is always the same in year 6. Everyone I've ever spoken to. I'm not sure it's ever going to change.

My dd is only in year 5, but they also seem to have done no work since the half term break... It seems strange given that there is supposed to be all this emphasis about raising standards!

Report
Creampastry · 06/07/2016 20:53

Mine have done sweet FA! Quite concerning since the SATS results are so bloody shite.
