To recreate DDs missed school trip

DD (5) is due to go on a school trip to London later this month to see a Matisse: drawing with scissors (the cut outs) exhibition. She has really enjoyed the topic and was so excited about going. We are in the Midlands so it was a 2 hour train trip each way. Her much awaited consultants appointment has typically now fallen on the exact date. She can't miss it so will have to miss the trip and is very upset. I am considering a Sunday trip to London to see it with her but DH thinks I'm barmy as it's a costly train trip and a long day. He says to just buy a book of his work but I think it's a completely different experience seeing it at a gallery. I have tried to find if there are any prints of his work displayed in local galleries but it's been fruitless. She particularly likes 'The Snail' Confused but I can't find where it is displayed anywhere.

Do you think it's worth the trip?

Yup. We did a 2 hour trip to London to see van gogh pictures as my reception girl had been painting them inschool. There's a lovely children's series "Katie and the....impressionists/sunflowers/etc" which we read and then hunted the pictures (and in Paris too!). However we were brief in there and then did other things.

spiderlight · 12/05/2016 17:42

I'd do it - I think it's a lovely idea!

Pangur2 · 12/05/2016 17:43

Is that the exhibition in the Tate? I'm sure that's well over... There's some Matisse in the RA at the moment, but they are paintings of gardens.

lekkerkroketje · 12/05/2016 17:45

If you can't make it, the Barber Institute at Birmingham university have at least one Matisse and is an excellent gallery anyway. It's not overwhelmingly big but has a brilliant collection and they're really used to school trips and Brownies etc. Definitely worth a trip at some point anyway.

But go, if you can, you'll have a lovely time in London!

Poonmig · 12/05/2016 17:46

What exhibit is it? I love Matisse

bakeoffcake · 12/05/2016 17:46

I did this for DD2 when she missed an exhibition in London due to illness. We had a lovely day out!

Goingtobeawesome · 12/05/2016 17:47

Wouldn't you have paid for her to go with school? What's the difference with you paying and going yourself ?

Piratepete1 · 12/05/2016 17:47

It's at the Southbank centre? Something like that. I'd love to make it a family trip but my 2 year old wouldn't cope on the train for 2 hours and the drive down would be a nightmare as I would be scared to drive in London. I've had a look At London hotels and they are quite expensive. Maybe we could drive and stay somewhere outside London which had an easy train trip into central London? I don't know.

The snail is in Tate Liverpool!

Great idea to recreate the trip. I would. Lovely thought.

Piratepete1 · 12/05/2016 17:47

I've phoned the Liverpool Tate this morning with high hopes but The Snail has gone Sad

TeenandTween - bit narrow minded, the OP's five year old is interested. Nice to see.

Italiangreyhound · 12/05/2016 17:49

Do it if your dd want to. What a lovely idea and you are a kind mummy.

GnomeDePlume · 12/05/2016 17:49

I couldnt find a gallery but I found this:

Piratepete1 · 12/05/2016 17:50

Although DD is only 5 she has always loved galleries and museums, maybe because it was something she could access when she was in her silent world. She is doing her Arts Discover Award and needs to learn about an artist for that.

LeaLeander · 12/05/2016 17:51

I would do it for an older child but probably not for a five-year-old. I don't remember much from when I was five and it sounds like quite a costly ordeal for you. As your husband says, get her a book or take her to a more local art museum for the museum experience, or something.

Ladycrazycat · 12/05/2016 17:52

I Would if I could afford it and I would add in an extra gallery or museum too to make it extra specia as she missed going with her class.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 12/05/2016 17:52

Oh whoops, Google fail, it's this one isn't it, so it's only on for a month.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 12/05/2016 17:52

Sounds like a fab idea OP. We did the same when ds missed the National Space Centre trip.

Verbena37 · 12/05/2016 17:53

Cou
D you not call the consultants secretary and ask if they can find another nearby appointment? Does your hospital not send a letter stating to call them to change if the appointment date isn't suitable?

If not, yes, a day with your DD in London at the exhibition sounds good.

Ladycrazycat · 12/05/2016 17:54

op you could try looking for a hotel somewhere like Amersham which is the very end of the Metropolitan line but is Buckinghamshire.

Verbena37 · 12/05/2016 17:54

Also, if you're only in the Midlands, can't you drive to the outskirts and then take the train in? We always do that as we are only an hour from London. We park at Cockfosters then take the train in. Much cheaper than train alone.

GnomeDePlume · 12/05/2016 17:55

National Portrait Gallery is always worth a visit:

Gazelda · 12/05/2016 17:55

I think that sounds a fab day out!

Pangur2 · 12/05/2016 17:56

Cool, I didn't know about the Southbank one! I thought maybe the teacher had made a mistake and thought the Tate one was still on. Nightmare!

Merrow · 12/05/2016 17:56

I think it's sponsored / organised / some connection with the Southbank but is actually being shown at the London Print Studio www.londonprintstudio.org.uk/exhibition/matisse-drawing-with-scissors/

I missed the Tate one, so thanks for the unintentional heads up!
