AIBU?

To think people who refuse to treat colds then moan they feel terrible are annoying?

DH and i both have a sniffle, nothing serious, just a mild spring cold virus.. bunged up, sneezy, slightly sore throat...etc

I will not sit and suffer for the hell of it, i prefer to dose myself up on the cold remedies to alleviate the symptoms, nothing some lemsip and some rest can't fix.

DH however will sit there and sniff and moan.. he feels crap, he's cold, he's tired, he's 'not well' yadda yadda... but you ask if he's taken anything and he says 'No'

Well... STFU and have a lemsip then. grrr. You're not helping yourself by being a martyr the the nasties you know!

I have just snorted laughing at Cory and Quim

My DH once had a spasm ( I use that term loosely) in his back
He was doing a silent scream so I take it that his voice was affected too
I got him two nurofen and a glass of water and he looked at me mournfully and said ' will these work ???'
I just said - no I just want to see if they give you an upset stomach....

I mean seriously .........

its quite definitely not flu.. i had that in Jan and was floored for 3 weeks!

its a spring cold/virus. Came down with it sunday and am pretty much nearly over it.

I prefer lemsip because i find it helps with my throat and the sinus pains/headache i always get as i have constant rhinitis anyway, so colds can be evil to me.. not helping that i have go awful hayfever right now either. ugh.

One thing that I do find helps speed up recovery is Night Nurse, simply because it's my firm belief that a good, uninterrupted 10hr sleep works wonders. Knocks you right out so you're not waking up every couple of hours with a running or blocked nose, then needing a drink of water, then needing the loo, etc...

Bollocks that nothing works. Paracetamol does relieve (although doesn't entirely eliminate) headaches, throat pain and aching joints. It's the decongestants and anything claiming to make the cold go away quicker that don't work.

At my work we don't get paid for the first three days of absence, so we HAVE to soldier on through illness (NMW, so can't afford to not go in unless clinically dead). I take handfuls of every medication going and have managed to work so far through two bad colds, one probable flu (and yes, I did cry getting out of bed that morning), a sprained ankle and a headache.

Vomiting is the only thing I can't medicate away, so far...

Mousefinkle · 27/04/2016 10:15

Yeah it's the same with anything.

"Oh my back reaaaallly hurts."
"have you taken pain relief?"
"No."

Hmm.
I call these people martyrs. If you don't want to take medication fair enough but you have no room to whinge and whine. I've had back to back colds since October, sick of it now... If the throat pain in particular gets really bad I'm dosed up on extra strength ibuprofen and paracetemol. I'm no martyr.

YY OP - completely agree

DH has the most infuriating excuse for not taking medication;

'It doesn't cure it, it just masks the symptoms.'

So? It will cure itself, masking the symptoms so you're not in a sulky sniffly strop for three days is exactly what we are aiming for here!

and breathe

The over the counter Sudafed works a treat for me. I'm not going to suffer for days on end if I don't have to.
The only time when I get cross with "Ohhh, I'm soooo ill!" brigade is when they inflict themselves on a large group of people. They sit and cough and sneeze and moan, all out for the sympathy.
Well if you're that bloody ill stay at home! I don't want your germs.

Just realising this sounds as if dd was checking her phone during a migraine- which would indeed have been suspicious. She found them on her phone after the migraine had passed. Can't be too careful these days...

"Cannot stand when people say they've got flu when they actually have a cold.
A cold can make you fairly miserable and last a good few days. "

There might be a good reason for that. Have you ever trying phoning an attendance-obsessed school about a child who has a temperature of 38.5, a streaming nose and a headache? Call it a cold and you will get a long lecture about how you should not keep children at home for no reason. Call it flu and they will report it as a medical absence.

Dd was absent from work the other day with a migraine and repeated vomiting: not something you can really do in a customer-facing job. During the course of the day she received a stream of text messages along the lines of "are you feeling better now?", "can you come in this afternoon?", "we need you back at work asap".

If you start a thread on MN about when one should keep a child off school, there will be a host of replies along the lines of "only if their legs fall off or they are vomiting". Yet common sense does seem to dictate that the child with the slight temperature and heavy cold would probably recover quicker if kept at home for a few days. So one has to tell oneself that it is flu to reconcile this with one's conscience.

If there is a tendency to martyrdom these days, I would say it is partly because there is very little leeway given to moderate illnesses.

I have twice developed pleurisy from soldiering on with a heavy cold. These days I would simply call it the flu.

I don't know why people get so angry about Lemsip. I usually just take paracetamol, but if I have a sore throat then I have a Lemsip or Beechams drink instead because it's a way of taking paracetamol while also soothing my throat with a hot drink instead of swallowing a nasty big pill.

I get that some people are under the impression eg that Nurofen will help their pain more than 50p ibuprofen which is probably the result of misleading marketing but paracetamol drinks aren't quite the same.

Re decongestants, I find the sudofed nasal spray is amazing but there are warnings that it can cause you to develop a permanently blocked nose which requires you to keep spraying to unblock it. I try to only use it before bed for that reason.

you can't treat a cold - you have to let it takes its course - not of the "cold remedies" work

I'm with you, OP. DH never thinks to take anything, even though history has shown that Paracetamol makes him feel much better (I have sympathy for people who don't feel any better after Paracetamol; I know some people respond to it better than others).

Also:
DH: I'm so tired. I need a lie in. Can you get up with DS (2yo) in the morning?
Me: I'm tired too. Can't you go to bed earlier (since DS won't sleep until all hours, so I'll not get to bed before 10 and will be up a few times in the night, while DH can go to bed whenever he likes and sleeps right through till morning)?
DH: But I want to watch this show stays up until midnight

YES! This is DP!

It drives me BONKERS, particularly when as a PP said it's something that would be gone in thirty seconds with a Nurofen!

"I've got a heeeeeeeadaaaaaache, waaaaaaaaaaaa, boooooooo, poor meeeeeeeeee"
"Oh well lucky you, I carry these magic pills in my handbag which will alleviate all your woes."
"What is it?"
"A painkiller. For the pain. To kill it."
"Hmmm, no thanks."
"Well have you had any water?"
"I had a tumbler of orange juice five hours ago."
"Right, well would you at least like some of this water?"
"OK"

IT'S NOT THE HEALING WATERS OF SODDING LOURDES YOU INFANTILISED TWIT, I'M GIVING IT TO YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE PROBABLY JUST DEHYDRATED

Why have some people developed absolutely no independent coping strategies?!!

I used to be firmly in the "take some fucking paracetamol or stop moaning" camp... But have recently read some research that found that taking drugs eg paracetamol that reduce your temperature, or something to unblock your nose actually hinders the body's fighting response and you prolong the cold.

I find that they don't do much for me. They may mildly alleviate the symptoms for a while but not enough to stop me moaning Grin I will have the odd paikiller for temp or pain and the odd lemon and honey. Tbh I find the steam in a cup of tea as effective as a lemsip.

My husband puts himself on a regime of the most expensive Lempsips etc he doesn't get better any quicker, has the same symptons as me and moans as much as me. We both love moaning.

Drr. Yes of course I know cold and flu is caused by a virus. As does everyone else. That's why stating it is unnecessary.
Saying "Virus" to me is justtrying to make it sound more than it is.
Same as a sore throat - no one cares what variety you have.

(I also know the difference between cold and influenza because strangely that too is common knowledge).

A cold can make you fairly miserable and last a good few days.
With flu, you can barely get out of bed.
and you'll be crying with sheer misery if you're anything like me as it's lasted so long
But dating you have a cold or virus isn't dramatic enough!

I definitely find taking a cold remedy works for me, but I've not been able to take them for nearly 3 years as I've been either pregnant or breastfeeding. There's more than just paracetamol in them.

Can't stand it when OH moans but won't make any effort to help himself.

The only thing I take for a cold is sudafed nose spray.

I don't know, nor do I care what's in the stuff. It works and is amazing.

I swear by Lemsip (or more usually Superdrug's ownbrand equivalent). It does me the power of good especially at work when I don't have ready access to a fresh lemon and a jar of runny honey to DIY. As long as you know what the relevant drugs are and what they should be used for, then they're very useful, and of course the shinier the packet and the more heavily advertised they are the more good they'll do you.

DH is a terror for moaning that he feels ill but then not taking anything that might actually alleviate the symptoms. YANBU OP.
